The wooden bridge of Litija was the first bridge in Zasavje. It was built in 1855, connected Litija and Gradec, and became a landmark of the town as well as an urban promenade.

Culture and history

The Litija City Museum presents the history and urban life of Litija. Topics include rafting and shipping on the Sava, the railway and Sitarjevec Mine. In the old town stands the parish church of St. Nicholas, which was expanded into a cruciform church in several construction phases.

Farbar Turn, also known as Litijski Turn, is the oldest building in Litija. Historians date its construction to the 14th century. For personal prayer, the church in Litija is open daily from morning until evening.

On the outskirts of Klenik stands an enlarged replica of the Vače Situla. It can be reached on foot via the Alley of Creativity, on prehistoric ground.

Mining and nature

Limonite stalactites can be seen in the main tunnel of Sitarjevec Mine. The mine is considered the only known site in Central Europe with growing limonite stalactites. In addition, more than 60 different mineral species have been found there; some of them can be seen in the tourist section of the mine.

The tour of the main tunnel leads through an authentic mining environment and lasts up to two hours. Sitarjevec Mine also offers the traditional miners’ meal “Sitarjevška mal'ca”.

Hiking and activities

At the GEOSS Adventure Park, there are seven different treetop climbing courses and a 915-metre-long zip line. For hiking, the Levstik Trail connects Litija and Čatež. It begins on Levstikova ulica in the old town of Litija and is marked with more than 80 information boards.

The Badjura Trail runs through the surrounding hills and encircles the valley of Litija and Šmartno. It is one of the circular mountain hiking trails registered by the Alpine Association of Slovenia. From Laze, you can return to Litija by train.

Traditions and regional work

In Oglarska dežela near Dole pri Litiji, visitors can learn about the long-standing tradition of making charcoal piles and charcoal production. They can also actively take part in this work with wood and fire.
