The Dežela Petra Klepca region lies along the Kolpa and is surrounded by mountains. In the area, the difference in elevation between the lowest and highest points is more than 800 metres. Osilnica serves as a starting point for trails that lead through the town, along rivers and into the surrounding area.

Nature

The Beaver Trail begins in the centre of Osilnica at the Petra Klepec Cultural and Tourist Centre. It follows the Čabranka and the Kolpa to their confluence, where there is an information board about beavers. Along the central section, visitors can also see old houses and the house names of the Osilnica Valley. The municipality’s tourist information lists eleven hiking routes in the Osilnica area and its surroundings.

In nearby Mirtoviči, there is the natural climbing wall Orlovska stena, with 61 routes graded from 5a to 8a. The approximately 2-kilometre-long Peter Klepec Adventure Trail circular hiking route also passes through Osilnica. It is aimed primarily at families and children and offers activities such as archery, skittles, horseshoe throwing and tug of war.

Several routes include specific time or distance information. The Osilnica–Šajbnik–Osilnica hiking route is listed as taking four hours, while the Osilnica–Kupari–Source of the Kolpa–Razloge–Osilnica route takes four and a half hours. The Obkolpska Trail begins in Osilnica and can be completed on foot, by bicycle or by paddle boat. The 43-kilometre circular route “Po poteh Petra Klepca 2” also begins in Osilnica and passes numerous sights.

Longer routes also start in Osilnica: the 220-kilometre cycle route leads from Osilnica to Metlika and Črnomelj, via Vinica and back to Osilnica. The paddling route begins in Osilnica and ends in Metlika.

Culture and History

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is part of the town’s history. The present-day Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Osilnica was built in 1876. The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul was rebuilt in 1875 and 1876 and consecrated on 11 September 1887. Its ground plan is in the shape of a Greek cross with very short arms. The church’s oldest bell dates from 1644. Osilnica already had its own priest in 1363.

In autumn 2001, the Galerija Staneta Jarma was opened in the birthplace of the sculptor Stane Jarm. It was open to registered groups until his death. In nearby Mirtoviči, Jože Gorše and his wife Katarina established a blacksmith museum in his birthplace in 2002. It commemorates three generations of blacksmiths.

The upper Kolpa Valley extends on the Slovenian side from Osilnica to Kostel. From the end of the 19th century until the second half of the 20th century, itinerant trade in various types of clocks was widespread there. The unit “Govori ob Čabranki in zgornji Kolpi” covers the entire area of the Municipality of Osilnica.
