Culture

The Narodni dom in Podgrad was ceremonially opened in 1905. Historically, the building housed a savings and loan bank. The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius was built before 1910 and is clad in dressed stone blocks. The Church of Saint James was built in 1645 on a hill below Stari grad. Organized groups can visit the Škoromati ethnological collection in the village of Podgrad by prior arrangement.

History

The hill of Stari grad bears the ruins of Novi grad Castle, which dates from the 13th century. The remains of the once-powerful castle in Podgrad include part of a defensive tower. In the old rural part of the settlement, the old houses once had steep, thatched roofs. Thus, the identified castle remains and a formerly widespread rural roof style in Podgrad represent different historical traces.

Traditions

On 25 July, the feast day of Saint James, Nograjsko opasilo is celebrated in Podgrad; a Mass is held for the occasion in the Church of Saint James. The feast day and the name of the church link the same saint’s name in two local contexts.

Route and Restaurant

Podgrad lies on an important route between Trieste and Rijeka. The Čičarija Route leads from the Podgrajsko podolje first into the Brkini Hills and then across the karst plateau of Čičarija.
