Holiday apartment in Hrastnik: Glassmaking history, nature and experiences

In Hrastnik, Roman history, glassmaking and mining culture, paths through nature and a wide range of events come together. Between historic sites, regional specialities and active pursuits, a diverse picture emerges of the Slovenian town and its municipality.

History and culture

In the local community of Steklarna Hrastnik, near the petrol station, there is a Roman settlement dating from the 1st to the 4th century. Villa de Seppi also points to a special architectural connection: it was built after the model of Miramar Castle near Trieste. The Hočijeva Gallery occasionally displays works by the painter Leopold Hočevar, who was born in Hrastnik.

Mlakarjevo stanovanje is designated as a cultural monument of local importance. It preserves two rooms from a former miner's apartment in an old mining colony. The Hrastnik Museum is housed in a former German school building and contains collections on archaeology, glassmaking, the chemical industry, coal mining and puppet theatre. In this way, Hrastnik brings together archaeological evidence, industrial history and insights into the former lives of miners.

There is a chapel in front of the Barbara mine tunnel. Hrastnik town centre also has a church that was built in 1936.

Paths and nature

The themed Pot SREČNO hiking trail runs through the municipalities of Laško, Hrastnik, Trbovlje and Zagorje ob Savi. Of the trail's total length of 29.7 km, 9.3 km lie within the municipality of Hrastnik. The route runs mostly through nature and includes preserved structures and exhibits from the technical heritage. In this way, the trail connects the landscape with visible traces of the technological past.

Within the municipality of Hrastnik, Kopitnik is a starting point for hikes to Gore, Kal, Turje, Rimske Toplice and Zidani Most. It is also home to a botanically important site with around 200 plant species and a mixture of Illyrian and alpine habitats. Due to its rare and endangered habitat types, this site is part of Natura 2000.

Events and activities

The annual Sovretov pohod starts at Hrastnik railway station or at Dolanka Sports Hall in Dol pri Hrastniku and follows an easy route to Šavna Peč, the birthplace of Anton Sovre. Hrastkov dan is an annual children's and family festival in Hrastnik featuring inflatable castles, creative workshops and presentations by local associations.

The Hrastnik Trail takes place on Kal planina. The running competitions start and finish there, and organised hikes are also offered. For water-based activities, the Center vodnih športov offers tourists organised rafting trips on the Sava. The covered 25-metre swimming pool in Hrastnik is open in the afternoons for recreational swimming and other swimming activities.

Jamatlon is an underground obstacle event held twice a year, in June and December, in a mine between Hrastnik and Trbovlje. Rdeči revirji is considered an international festival of performing arts. It takes place in Hrastnik, Trbovlje and Zagorje ob Savi; Litija is also named as a venue. With street theatre, dance and circus, the festival brings the mining heritage to life.

Regional cuisine

Funšterc, also known as knapovsko sonce, is a dish from the Zasavje region. Krumpantoč, also called Krumpatoč or Krumpentoč, is an old speciality of the glassworkers that later spread to other parts of Zasavje.
