Veľké Kostoľany: Church, Pilgrimage and Local History
The late Gothic Church of Saint Vitus in Veľké Kostoľany was built in 1464. To this day, its chancel preserves a Gothic ribbed vault, walled-up Gothic windows, a stone sacrament house and a stone saddle portal. The main altar dates from 1815 and bears a painting of Saint Vitus.
Culture and History
Another sacred building is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. It was built in 1768 as a Baroque chapel with a semicircular apse, dome and integrated tower. Inside, there is a Baroque altar from the second half of the 18th century with a painting and a relief of the Virgin Mary.
Every year, on the Sunday around 8 September, the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, a pilgrimage takes place to a chapel dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Believers from the surrounding municipalities take part. The Stations of the Cross are also part of the preserved local history: in 1924, Jozef Magula, who came from Veľké Kostoľany, had a new Stations of the Cross built, replacing the earlier Calvary depiction consisting of seven masonry images.
Archaeological excavations in 1959 brought to light a human skeleton from the 5th to the 12th century AD, as well as the skeleton of a child from the Early Iron Age. The finds include an amber bead, Late Stone Age Slavonian pottery, Moravian painted pottery, as well as stone and blade tools made of radiolarite and obsidian. Archaeological investigations at the old brickworks and the clay pits in Zákostoľany also provide evidence of settlement from the Neolithic period, approximately from 5000 to 2000 BCE.
Landscape and Local Character
Veľké Kostoľany developed as a linear streamside village along the Chtelnička stream, which flows through the Kostolianska Valley. Agricultural land predominates in the village and covers 85.05% of the cadastral area. The mountains Holý Vrch, Šanec and Veľká Pec are located in the surroundings of Veľké Kostoľany; Zlatý Vrch lies in the wider regional area.
Several châteaux are also assigned to this wider regional area: Kaštieľ Chtelnica, Hlohovský zámok and Kaštieľ Horné Trhovište. Pevnosť Leopoldov, a fortress, is also located in the vicinity of Veľké Kostoľany.

The Cyklo Holeška TOUR has a designated route stop in Veľké Kostoľany behind the municipal office. For quieter cultural pursuits, the municipal library offers 4,001 book titles from various literary genres for loan.
The brass band tradition emerged from a local music circle in 1919 and, according to the municipal history, has continued to this day. The traditional fair in Veľké Kostoľany includes a music programme, activities for children, as well as stalls with refreshments and handicrafts. The fair also includes a goulash-cooking competition.
