Veľká Mača combines archaeological traces, sacred buildings and small monuments within the village landscape. The Veľká Mača Museum near the municipal office is a branch of the Museum of Regional Studies in Galanta. Its archaeological exhibits come mainly from the Mačianske vŕšky site and date from the Middle Stone Age to the Middle Ages. The archaeological evidence from Veľká Mača includes Mesolithic finds, a Neolithic settlement and a row cemetery dating from the 10th to the 11th century. Mačianske vŕšky is an archaeological site on the border between Sereď and Veľká Mača, in the direction of Sládkovičovo. Culture and History
The Roman Catholic Church of Saint John the Baptist in Veľká Mača was built in 1783 in the Classical style with Baroque elements. An original medieval stone baptismal font has been preserved in the church. A Gothic stone baptismal font in the current church building is probably the last relic of the vanished medieval church of Veľká Mača. The church tower has two bells, while the windows depict saints in stained glass. A probably still Romanesque medieval church once stood in the centre of Veľká Mača, near today’s Holy Trinity Monument.
Village Landscape and Tradition
The Holy Trinity Monument stands in the centre of Veľká Mača on the site of the former church and was erected in 1860. Next to the kindergarten on Hlavná ulica stands a statue of Saint Florian, created by the stonemason J. Juhász from Sereď at the beginning of the 20th century. The statue of Saint Donatus stands on Cigánska ulica and was erected in 1910 by the local Rosary Society. Near the Protestant cemetery is a statue of Saint Wendelin, erected in 1820 by a local landowner. The Lourdes grotto was created in 1991 and is located next to the Church of Saint John the Baptist. In front of the museum stands a monument to deported and displaced Hungarians. One statue was renovated in 1950.
Veľká Mača lies near the historic intersection of the Via Bohemica between Buda and Prague and the road between Bratislava and Nitra.
