Holiday apartment in Šelpice: Culture, Archaeology and Cycling Route

Šelpice is located 6 km northwest of Trnava. Historical monuments, archaeological finds, cultural events and a cycling route running through the village give the destination a variety of thematic aspects.

Culture

The neo-Gothic Church of Christ the King in Šelpice dates from 1946 and is located in the cemetery grounds. It was built from 1939 to 1946 and consecrated in November 1946. The cemetery in Šelpice also contains a statue of Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.

Other memorials include a stone cross depicting the Passion of Christ and a statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1894, as well as the Šelpice monument to those who fell in the First World War, dating from 1928. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1907 stands on the bridge over the Trnávka towards Bohdanovce.

Šelpice is also associated with the regional traditions of crafts and singing. The village was formerly known for its embroidery. A Gatrová embroidery with a peacock motif from Šelpice is dated to the 1930s. The DOLINA singing group from Šelpice was founded in February 2014, enriches the cultural events in Šelpice and occasionally also sings in the church of Šelpice.

History

The cadastral area of Šelpice was already intensively settled towards the end of the Palaeolithic. Finds from the Neolithic and subsequent cultures make Šelpice an important archaeological site. An archaeological settlement feature was assigned on the basis of movable finds to the Lengyel culture (5000/4700–4000 BC). The chronological span of the findings mentioned therefore ranges from the Palaeolithic through the Neolithic to the period of the Lengyel culture.

At the Nad Gajdárovou archaeological site in the cadastral area of the neighbouring municipality of Šelpice, a fragment of the handle of a glass skyphos was found and dated as an import from the early imperial period. The find supplements the settlement traces with a single archaeological indication from a considerably later period.

Surroundings

Several cultural, historical and scenic destinations lie around Šelpice: Kaštieľ Trstín, Smolenický zámok and Kaštieľ Budmerice castles. The Šarkán mountain, Hlboča waterfall, Driny Cave and Klokočina mountain are also located in the surrounding area.

In the wider regional surroundings of Šelpice lies Zámok Červený Kameň castle.

Cycling

The “Z Trnavy do Smoleníc a späť” cycling route passes through Šelpice. It is considered moderately difficult and runs along moderate inclines. The pump track in Šelpice was the venue for a public cycling event. The name of the route refers to the connection from Trnava to Smolenice and back, while Šelpice appears as one of the places along its course.

Events

Every year on 30 April at 18:00, the traditional raising of the maypole takes place at the cultural centre in Šelpice. For 2026, the raising was announced at this location. The date is therefore specifically given as 30 April and the location as the cultural centre in Šelpice.
