Šúrovce: Holiday apartment amid church, festivals and history

Šúrovce is home to the neoclassical Church of the Holy Archangel Michael. It was built between 1793 and 1811 on the site of an older religious building. Inside, it preserves late Baroque and neoclassical furnishings, including a late Baroque side altar, a neoclassical pulpit, a neoclassical baptismal font and a painting of the Crucifixion. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The building thus combines an older religious history with construction dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The furnishings feature late Baroque forms alongside neoclassical elements, making the different stylistic-historical references of the interior visible.

Culture

A war memorial is located near the parish church. Another historical landmark stands in Veľké Šúrovce: the stone wayside cross is an older field cross with a newer corpus of Christ. Its inscription names Šišák Michal and his wife Terézia Zeman as the donors. Alongside the monument at the parish church, both landmarks form part of the visible historical heritage of the municipality. The wayside cross thus preserves both the older cross form and the younger corpus of Christ, as well as the named donation.

History

Settlement in the vicinity of Veľké Šúrovce is documented as early as the Neolithic period. Archaeological finds from the Roman-Barbarian period have also been discovered in the surrounding area. There is likewise archaeological evidence of settlement during the Great Moravian period. Written records go back to the Middle Ages: the first written references to Veľké Šúrovce and Zemianske Šúrovce date from 1241 and 1256. The archaeological evidence and written records thus represent different forms of historical documentation for the immediate surroundings of the two districts.
