Holiday apartment in Vrbové: Culture and the Zelená cesta

Vrbové is home to a bell tower with an unusual history. The foundation stone was laid on 7 May 1832, and the tower was completed in 1835. On 28 October 1930, the bell tower suddenly began to lean after prolonged rainfall. The leaning bell tower is a tourist attraction; because of it, Vrbové is also known by the nickname “Slovak Pisa”.

Culture

The Church of St. Martin is the oldest architectural monument in Vrbové. The first written mention dates from 1332 to 1337. The church was probably built towards the end of the 14th century as a new single-nave stone Gothic church; older schematisms name 1397 as the year of construction. Thus, several dates appear side by side in the building’s history: the early written mention, the probable construction in the late 14th century and the year cited in older schematisms. In the rear part of the northern nave, there is a mechanical moving nativity scene. It is an independent detail of the church’s furnishings and adds to the perspective on its long history.

The present-day synagogue is also part of Vrbové’s architectural history. It was built in 1882–1883 in the Moorish style. At the time of its construction, Jewish inhabitants made up one third of Vrbové’s population. Since 1942, the synagogue has no longer been used for religious purposes. Its architecture, construction period and information about the population structure at that time thus combine with a clear historical change in the building’s use.

The manor curia dates from the second half of the 17th century; Count Móric Beňovský was born there. The “Beňovský svet” monument presents the interesting and adventurous life story of Móric Beňovský. The Beňovský Monument 2026 is part of the presentation of Count Móric Beňovský in his birthplace, Vrbové. The curia, monument and presentation in 2026 all refer to the same historical figure, although the individual places and forms of remembrance are not identical.

Visitor information

The historical exhibition of the town of Vrbové is temporarily inaccessible due to reconstruction. Guided tours of the town and access to Vrbové’s historical sites must be arranged at least one working day before the planned visit and confirmed by a town employee. For visits, it is therefore necessary to distinguish between the exhibition, which is currently inaccessible, and the guided tours or access to the historical sites, which require prior arrangement.

Cycling

Another connection to the town is provided by the Zelená cesta cycle route. It connects Piešťany and Vrbové and is almost 18 kilometres long. The Zelená cesta is used for recreation and cycling tourism. Its connection between the two towns and its stated length describe it as an independent part of the local cycling and leisure activities.
