Holiday apartment in Šarovce – Archaeology, churches and the Hron riverbank

Šarovce combines archaeological traces, historic sacred buildings, a municipal museum and its location on the right bank of the Hron. The history of the village stretches from the Baden culture to a bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius unveiled in 2014.

Culture

Around 3000 BC, there is evidence of intensive settlement in Šarovce by the Baden culture, including numerous pottery fragments. The archaeological finds also include two bronze daggers discovered in cultural pits. Looking even further back in time leads to the La Tène period: from 450 BC until the beginning of the Common Era, a spacious Celtic farmstead stood in the area of present-day Šarovce.

Later periods are also present in the villagescape and its cultural points of reference. The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Guardian Angels in Veľké Šarovce is a Classicist building. It was erected on the site of an older early Gothic church dating from the 13th century. In Malé Šarovce, the Reformed church was built in 1780 as a toleration church without a tower. It was enlarged in 1832 before receiving its tower in 1899.

The Dedinské múzeum Šarovce presents archaeological, ethnographic and current exhibitions of the municipality. Visits can be arranged with Alžbeta Boháčová at 036/7792056. Another visible reminder of the village’s history is the bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, unveiled in Šarovce on 19 November 2014.

Local tradition also includes the former chapel of Saint Donáth. It had stood for a long time on the right-hand side of the road leading out toward Želiezovce and was demolished. A site for a chapel was subsequently selected on the right-hand side of the road near the granary in the direction of Želiezovce. As a recurring cultural event, Csemadok has organised the cultural event “Turičné stretnutie” every May since 2005.

Nature

The location on the Hron is complemented by the VN Šarovce fishing grounds. Near Šarovce, they cover a 19.8-hectare water surface extending from the MVE Šarovce to the Tekovské Lužany–Demandice road bridge. Fishing is prohibited year-round at the functional structures of the MVE Šarovce facility.

Getting around

Šarovce is connected to the national transport network via road I/76 from Štúrovo through Kalná nad Hronom (Levice) to Hronský Beňadik. In the immediate vicinity of the municipality, this road intersects with I/75, which runs from Nové Zámky to Veľký Krtíš.

For cyclists, the Pohronská cyklomagistrála is suitable for mountain bikes and e-bikes. The village’s range of themes thus brings together historical testimonies, sacred buildings, exhibitions, an annual cultural event, a connection to the waterways and a cycling route.
