Holiday apartment in Kalná Nad Hronom: Discover culture along the Hron

Kalná nad Hronom is located in the Danubian Lowland, in the right-bank floodplain of the Hron River. The municipal area is flat to gently hilly and is characterized by Tertiary deposits covered by a thick layer of loess. In the cadastral areas of Kalná and Kalnica, bodies of water account for a significant part of the area; the Hron, an important river for water management, flows along the eastern boundary.

Culture and history

Kalná nad Hronom was first mentioned in 1209 under the name “villa Kalon”. Even older traces are documented by archaeological finds, including an Eneolithic settlement with fluted pottery. Settlements from the Hallstatt period, the La Tène period and the Roman-Barbarian period have also been identified. A grave from the Migration Period, dated to the 4th or 5th century, was also found in the municipal area.

As relics of the Roman era, two prehistoric hillforts have been preserved in Kalná nad Hronom; they are associated with the former border region of the Quadi in the direction of the Iazyges. Cultural and historical monuments also include a Reformed Classicist church from 1806. The Church of St. Peter and Paul was originally built in 1733 in the Baroque style and was given a new façade in 1866 in a late Classicist-Romantic style. It is a single-nave church with a semicircular presbytery and a three-storey projecting tower. Its furnishings include a Rococo pulpit with pink festoons from the mid-18th century and a stone Rococo baptismal font in the shape of a shell, with the Lamb of God on the lid, from the second half of the 18th century.

The Dom bojovej slávy in Kalná nad Hronom is a military history gallery with a tank. From April to October, the Dom bojovej slávy is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; it is closed on Mondays. In addition, numerous cultural events are organized in Kalná nad Hronom for religious holidays, local traditions and events connected with agriculture.

Leisure and recreation

Ostrov pohybu is a seven-hectare island that is almost one kilometre long, intended for active recreation and relaxation. The area is suitable for runners, cyclists and families with children. Kalná nad Hronom also has sports and recreational facilities with a wellness area, a year-round recreational pool and a fitness centre.

The Nové Zámky–Zvolen railway line runs through Kalná nad Hronom.
