Ipeľský Sokolec between the Ipeľ and wine cellars

Ipeľský Sokolec is located on the right bank of the Ipeľ. The river forms the border between Slovakia and Hungary.

Landscape

The Jelšovka stream flows through Ipeľský Sokolec and empties into the Ipeľ. From Ipeľský Sokolec, there are views of the Ipeľ region and the Börzsöny Mountains. Numerous natural riverside habitats can still be observed in the Lower Ipeľ Valley.

Culture and history

The Dom ľudových tradícií is an ethnographic exhibition comprising three rooms. The Roman Catholic Church of Krista Kráľa is the larger of the two local churches and dates from the 17th century. It displays 14 Stations of the Cross. The Trianon Monument, a kopjafa, stands on Zag-hegy above Ipeľský Sokolec. It was erected in 2020 to mark the centenary of the Treaty of Trianon. The Old Bridge Monument commemorates the site of the original pier of a wooden bridge over the Ipeľ that connected the two riverbanks.

Wine and village character

There are more than 100 wine cellars on Pivničný kopec. Almost 150 traditional wine-press houses have been preserved on the hill above the village.

The wine-press houses come in two traditional forms: tent-like huts above cellar shafts, and press houses built from adobe bricks with tiled roofs. Visitors can see numerous 19th-century houses with decorated façades and gabled roofs.

Wine harvest festivals take place every year in Ipeľský Sokolec in autumn. In the past, Ipeľský Sokolec was known for growing paprika; the peppers were not ground but broken into pieces.
