Pohronský Ruskov: Holiday Apartment between Archaeology and the Hron

Pohronský Ruskov combines a multi-layered past with a clearly recognizable river landscape. Archaeological finds from several periods, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, the history of the sugar factory and the Military Historical Museum offer different ways of experiencing the town. At the same time, the Hron shapes the landscape in which Pohronský Ruskov is situated.

Natural Environment

Pohronský Ruskov lies in the eastern part of the Danubian Lowland on a low river terrace on the right bank of the Hron. The river flows through the town's cadastral area for a length of 3 km. Remnants of willow-poplar floodplain forests have also been preserved along the Hron. Thus, the location in the flat landscape and the preserved floodplain forest remnants meet directly, without reducing the character of the town to just one landscape element.

Archaeology

Pohronský Ruskov is an important archaeological site. Neolithic settlement finds include artefacts associated with the Linear Pottery, Slovak Painted Pottery and Lengyel cultures. Further archaeological evidence dates from the Slavic period and also includes settlement remains from the Roman-Barbarian cultural sphere. Archaeological finds from the Hallstatt and La Tène periods, as well as a burial ground, have also been documented in Pohronský Ruskov. The sites thus connect several clearly identified periods and cultural spheres within the town.

Church and Remembrance

The present-day Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pohronský Ruskov was built from 1953 to 1962 after the original church was destroyed by retreating German troops. The tower was added in 2003. Ecclesiastically, the church is a filial church in Pohronský Ruskov and belongs to the parish of Hronovce. The memory of the destruction and its consequences is also visible in the town: remnants of the original church bell form part of the memorial to the victims of the Second World War.

Industrial History

The Pohronský Ruskov sugar factory was founded in 1893 and expanded, among other things, to include a large mill. Its former buildings are evidence of industrial architecture from the period around the turn of the 20th century. The sugar factory complex also included a narrow-gauge railway. It connected the complex with the surrounding manor farms and agricultural holdings. Thus, in addition to the surviving buildings, the former connection between the factory site and its agriculturally shaped surroundings has also been preserved.

Military Historical Museum

The Military Historical Museum Pohronský Ruskov displays various dioramas, authentic photographs, weapons and military equipment. The exhibition also features an operational Soviet T34/85 tank. The collection comprises around 300 weapons. The museum can be visited daily by telephone appointment. Every August, it hosts the South Wind military show in memory of the soldiers who fell in the military conflicts on the banks of the Hron.
