Holiday Apartment in Stupava – Culture, Park and the Morava Floodplain

Stupava combines Baroque architecture, a historic park and direct access to the Morava Floodplain. The town reveals different sides: cultural monuments and historic sites stand alongside paths through forest complexes, while its agricultural history is associated with cucumbers and cabbage. This creates a destination whose special features can be explored on a walk as well as on a cycling or hiking tour.

Culture

Stupavská Kalvária is a national cultural monument. Its central Baroque chapel features a striking two-storey design. The fourteen Stations of the Cross were probably incorporated into the enclosing wall of Stupavská Kalvária in the second half of the 19th century. The dating is therefore expressed cautiously, while the structural connection between the chapel, the stations and the wall defines the appearance of the site.

The Baroque manor house in Stupava was built in the 17th century on the site of an earlier water castle. A hiking trail leads from this manor house to the ruins of Pajštún Castle. The trail thus connects the surviving Baroque building in Stupava with the remains of the castle complex, although the two structures do not share the same history of origin.

Another historic landmark is the greenhouse in Stupava. It is considered a uniquely preserved monument of its kind in Slovakia. The Ferdiš Kostka Museum is also part of the town’s cultural character. It is currently closed to the public and awaiting reconstruction. At the same time, it preserves an authentic pottery workshop with its equipment, tools and a historic horizontal kiln.

Nature

Kaštieľsky Park is suitable for walks and other low-intensity leisure activities. The historic waterfall has also been restored there. An up-to-date note is important for planning: Kaštieľsky Park was expected to reopen to the public from 18 April 2026. This information describes a planned reopening, not a state that has already come into effect.

The Morava Floodplain is directly accessible from Stupava, particularly for cyclists via marked cycle tourism routes. In places, the cycling route to the Morava Floodplain passes through contiguous forest complexes. These forest complexes are fragments of former floodplain forests; the reference therefore concerns earlier floodplain forest structures and not an unrestricted present-day extent of such forests.

Local Character

The historic agricultural tradition is also part of the town’s history. It was shaped especially by cucumbers and cabbage. Farmers sold these products at markets in nearby Vienna and Pressburg. The traditional agriculture therefore refers not only to the crops grown, but also to the former sales destinations of the farmers’ produce.

Stupava thus offers several clearly distinguishable points of interest: Baroque architecture, a listed Calvary complex, historic museum and greenhouse landmarks, Kaštieľsky Park, and cycling and hiking access to the Morava Floodplain and Pajštún Castle.
