Starčevo brings together an archaeological namesake with art, literature, music and local traditions. The Grad archaeological site gave its name to the Neolithic Starčevo culture; exhibitions, events and folklore programmes showcase other cultural facets. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing these connections to the town’s history from individual events tied to specific dates. This will help you decide whether prehistory or a particular cultural programme should shape your stay.

Archaeological roots

The Grad archaeological site in Starčevo gave its name to the Neolithic Starčevo culture. The town’s name thus also points to a broader prehistoric context. Starčevo-Grad was designated an immovable cultural asset of exceptional importance in 1957. The naming and designation complement each other: one connects the site with the Neolithic culture, while the other identifies its special cultural and historical classification. Those interested in archaeology will find a clear historical focus here for exploring Starčevo.

Art, literature and music

The “Noć muzeja” in Starčevo was held for the fourth consecutive year in 2025, from 16 to 20 May. The programme included the children’s art workshop “Kolaž neolitskih šara” (Collage of Neolithic Patterns). It took up a Neolithic theme in an art format expressly aimed at children. For families, this is a concrete example of how local history can be combined with a creative approach. If you are planning your trip around a particular programme, check its dates for your travel period.

The “Boem” Gallery presented the fourth exhibition by Ivana Dimitrić Pešić, an academic painter from Starčevo. On display were her latest works, created over the two preceding years. The gallery also continued a series of literary evenings featuring poets and prose writers. The international festival of small tamburitza ensembles, “Starčevačka tamburica,” was held at the Starčevo Cultural Centre for the 23rd time. “Starčevački dani knjige” established a local tradition of bringing together well-known authors from the region. The programme included a poets’ caravan, and the event reached its fifth edition.

Folklore and local traditions

Starčevo’s local folklore heritage was presented through folk dances, songs, costumes and customs. Thematic bazaars were held several times a year at Trg neolita. Visitors could buy a full range of Easter goods as well as items made by local craftspeople. The traditional culinary competition “Izbor za najlepši slavski kolač” was also held in Starčevo for the eleventh time. The events each have a different focus: the folklore programme features performances, the bazaars offer seasonal goods and handicrafts, and the competition centres on a specific culinary occasion.

Plan your visit and choose your stay

The “Merac” horse-breeding facility is at the entrance to Starčevo from the direction of Pančevo, on the main road. Organised tourist visits and school trips took place there. If you plan to visit “Merac,” check the visiting arrangements with the facility in advance.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Starčevo, you can start by deciding what brings you here: do you mainly want to explore the archaeological history, or should a particular cultural programme shape your stay? In the latter case, plan your trip around the dates of the programme; in the former, the town’s history remains a distinct focus in its own right.
