Kovin: Discover the Danube, Nature and History
Accommodation in Kovin
Kovin combines vivid connections to the Danube with protected natural areas and a layered history. In the town itself, you’ll find an extraordinary model and historic churches; in the municipality and surrounding area, nature and water experiences add further highlights. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to first consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay.
Danube Model and Regatta
At the Grad site is the world’s unique and largest model of the course of the Danube, about one kilometre from the town centre. The concrete model is 146 metres long and serves as an educational and illustrative resource for navigators and other visitors. Its exceptional length makes the depiction itself a striking feature. If you’re interested in the course of the river, the model combines its size with an explicitly educational purpose.
The Kovin Regatta 2026 offered a different perspective: it set off from the landing stage at Kovin-Dunavac on 27 July. That year, the Tourism Organisation of the Municipality of Kovin held the regatta for the third time. The model and the regatta thus represent different connections to the water: an informative exploration of the Danube’s course and a specific regatta event.
Nature and Water in the Municipality and Surrounding Area
Sixty-two percent of the Deliblatska Peščara Special Nature Reserve lies within the Municipality of Kovin. The Kraljevac Special Nature Reserve is also within the municipality, in Deliblato. There are opportunities there for sport fishing, hiking, birdwatching and nature photography. This selection combines active pursuits with opportunities to observe nature attentively.
Near Dubovac, in the surroundings of Kovin, lies Dubovački rit, a natural area where Deliblatska Peščara and the Danube meet. Raj Beach is also near Kovin, on a branch of the Danube; in summer, it offers opportunities for swimming. Each place has a different focus: Kraljevac offers several nature activities, Dubovački rit brings landscape and river together, and Raj is a spot for summer swimming. This makes it easier to prioritise your interests in nature and water.
History and Culture in Kovin
Contra Margum was a medieval town that existed, with brief interruptions, throughout the period from the 12th to the 15th century. The history of Kovin’s fortifications is another notable historical topic: they were destroyed under the terms of the Treaty of Belgrade in 1739. Near Kovin also stands the Maria Theresa Bridge, built of bricks. Its construction is believed to date to the early 18th century.
The town’s religious buildings include the Serbian Orthodox Church of Saints Michael and Gabriel, built in 1780, and the Romanian Orthodox Church in Kovin, dedicated to Saint Ilija and dating from 1904. The archaeological collection at the Kovin Cultural Centre offers another cultural dimension, with numerous objects from different periods.
The gallery programme of Centar za kulturu Kovin is also part of the cultural scene: in 2026, the centre is holding its 40th October Art Salon. The invitation to participate is dated 24 August 2026. Together, these cultural themes span medieval town history and historic buildings, as well as the collection and gallery programme.
Which experiences do you want to shape your stay?
When looking for a holiday apartment in Kovin, you can start by choosing your preferred focus: cultural sites in the town, activities in the Kraljevac nature reserve, or the opportunity to swim at Raj in summer. The Danube model and the regatta also appeal to different interests. If you rank these experiences according to how you prefer to spend your days, it will become clearer whether culture, nature or water is the deciding factor for your trip.
