Surduk: Wine, Danube riverbank and archaeological traces
Accommodation in Surduk
Surduk combines a distinctive Danube riverbank with archaeological sites, memorial sites and wine experiences. A dry loess valley that slopes down towards the river is also part of the local landscape, along with traces from several eras. This brings different themes together for your stay: landscape and history, a wine tasting or the swimming pool complex on the Danube riverbank.
Loess landscape and the Danube riverbank
Surduk developed along Dunavska ulica. The street follows a dry loess valley that slopes down towards the Danube riverbed. The location of the archaeological sites is also connected to this landscape. Marina lies on a high Danube riverbank that is continually being undercut by the river. The site thus gives the local history a tangible connection to the landscape: here, an elevated riverbank meets the river’s constant effects.
The Gradina (Rittium) archaeological site lies on a high loess bank of the Danube near the present-day village of Surduk. It comprises a fortification, a settlement and a necropolis. Gradina is also home to a memorial obelisk overlooking the opposite bank of the Danube and the Banat plain. These location details offer two distinct ways to take in the landscape: the elevated position on the loess bank and the expansive view across the river to the plain.
Archaeological sites and memorial sites
Marina is a multi-layered settlement dating from the Eneolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Its chronology thus spans several prehistoric periods. At Gradina (Rittium), by contrast, the focus is on its three components: a fortification, a settlement and a necropolis. Another archaeological site, Čolićev Čot, is a settlement beside a fortification. Roman building rubble, daub, glass, bones and fragments of Roman pottery have been found on the surface there. The categories of finds mentioned illustrate the different archaeological themes associated with these sites.
The memorial sites also each have their own historical context. The Spomenik NOB-u (Svetionik) in Surduk was erected in 1961 and is listed as immovable cultural heritage in the “important site” category. Another chapter in the local history is associated with Marinkovićev salaš in the Surduk area: during the Second World War, partisans met there, and the Podunavski partizanski odred partisan unit was formed. A monument erected in 1981 stands at the salaš.
Wine and regional cuisine
Vinarija Milanović combines a restaurant with a distinctive setting: it is located amid a vineyard at a lookout point above the Danube. The menu focuses on sharing dishes paired with wines from the wine cellar. Only Milanović wines, homemade juices and local rakija are served. Visits for wine tastings must be arranged in advance.
The Slankamenka wine tour also visits Vinarija Milanović in Surduk. There, wines made from the Neoplanta, Frankovka, Probus and Sila grape varieties are tasted. The tour also follows the Danube riverbank near Slankamen and Surduk. Tour dates and availability require prior arrangement. If the tasting is to be the main focus of your stay, factor this arrangement into your plans.
Another highlight by the river
The “Horizont Swimming & Spa” complex is located in Surduk on the banks of the Danube and has five swimming pools. You should reconfirm the operating details before travelling. The swimming complex offers a distinct focus alongside Surduk’s archaeological sites, memorial sites and wine experiences.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Surduk, you can start by considering what matters most to you during your stay: the landscape and archaeological history, wine and tastings, or the swimming pool complex. The differences are clear: visits for wine tastings and the wine tour must be arranged in advance; for the swimming complex, you should confirm the latest operating details.
