Beška between Danube Channels and Kalakača

The Kalakača archaeological site is located in the Beška area on a loess terrace near the right bank of the Danube. Pottery featuring “S” motifs from Kalakača contributed to the development of a distinct Kalakača horizon within the Bosut cultural group of the Early Iron Age. Around 215 structures were documented at the archaeological site. These are predominantly circular pits that served as grain silos for storing grain and other agricultural products. Artefacts from the fortified settlement of Kalakača near Beška are also displayed in the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Vojvodina. This makes it possible to understand the site’s archaeological significance beyond the excavation site itself.

Church Art, Remembrance, and Regional Culture

The Church of the Presentation of the Most Holy Mother of God in Beška features architecture dating from the second half of the 18th century. Its furnishings include Classicist wood carvings by the Vojvodina woodcarver Pavle Bošnjaković from 1836, as well as paintings by the artist Jeftimije Popović from 1840. There is also an original work by Uroš Predić at the top of the iconostasis. Visitors interested in culture will find several specific points of interest here: architectural history, woodcarving, and painting stand side by side.

The culture of remembrance is also part of Beška’s character. The monument commemorates six residents of Beška who were shot by Austro-Hungarian soldiers in Petrovaradin. It is a Classicist obelisk made of dark granite. The names of the victims are inscribed on its front, while verses by Jovan Jovanović Zmaj appear on the back.

The local heritage collection of Stara Beška includes old photographs of Beška, a numismatic collection, old and rare objects from Beška and the surrounding area, as well as works from the “Danica Jovanović” art colony. The cultural profile is complemented by the event “Dani vojvođansko-bavarske kulture – Beška Fest”, which has been held since 2012. The Beška Bridge, also known as Beščanski most, is considered the longest bridge over the Danube.
