Where the Studva flows into the Bosut, Morović Fortress stands on elevated ground. The Bosut forests surround the town, while its historical traces range from evidence of a Roman settlement to medieval buildings and churches. Horses, forests and riverside fishing offer other ways to explore. You can plan your stay around whether you are most interested in history, nature or activities.

The Fortress and the Town’s Early History

Morović Fortress was built after 1332 on the orders of Jovan Marotić, Ban of Mačva. Its trapezoidal layout and brickwork give a clear sense of its design. The walls are about 2 metres thick, and the outer walls are approximately 2.5 metres high. After the Maroti family died out, Jovan Corvin was given the fortress in 1484. These recorded dates tell the story both of its construction and of a later change in ownership.

An earlier period is also reflected in the town’s history: a Roman cemetery and a large find of Roman silver coins from the mid-3rd century point to an earlier Roman settlement in Morović. The coin hoard and cemetery place the town’s history in a different period from the fortress.

Churches and Pilgrimage

The Catholic Church of St Mary is a Romanesque-Gothic building dating from the 13th to 14th century and is one of the oldest preserved architectural monuments in Srem. The Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God dates from 1834. The two churches thus represent different historical periods and religious traditions in the town.

The Marian ecumenical pilgrimage sanctuary “Marije pomoćnice kršćana i duša u čistilištu” is also part of Morović’s religious history. On 2 September 2011, the Bishop of Srijem, Monsignor Đuro Gašparović, declared it a new ecumenical Marian pilgrimage sanctuary. For 2012, a pilgrimage practice is documented, with prayer meetings on the 2nd of each month.

The Bosut Forests, Horses and Rivers

The area around Morović lies in the heart of the Bosut forests and is surrounded by around 22,000 hectares of woodland, consisting mainly of high-quality pedunculate oak. The forest landscape offers a distinct focus alongside the town’s history.

Another attraction is the “Karadjordjevo” stud farm. It belongs to the Morović military institution and was founded in 1885. Visitors can ride horses, take carriage rides through the nature of the Special Nature Reserve, or visit the horse-breeding museum. The activities cater to different interests: spending time with horses, taking a ride through nature or learning about horse breeding. Check the current arrangements locally before your visit.

Where the Studva and Bosut meet in Morović, it is possible to fish from the riverbank for carp and pike. If you plan to fish, bear in mind that conditions and local rules may change, and check the latest situation in advance.

Choose a Holiday Apartment to Match Your Travel Interests

When looking for a holiday apartment in Morović, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on. The fortress, churches and archaeological traces are ideal for a stay centred on local history. The stud farm, forest and riverside fishing offer other options. This lets you choose Morović as a destination based on what you want your trip to focus on, rather than looking only for a particular type of accommodation.
