Bajina Bašta on the Drina: Culture, Water and Tara

The Drina runs along the north-western and northern sides of the municipality of Bajina Bašta for a length of 60 kilometres and is the most important river along its municipal boundary. Another landmark is the House on the Drina. In Serbia, it is known as Zelenika and is one of the best-known landmarks of the river and the Podrinje region. Rača, educational trail and routes in the Tara Mountains

Rača Monastery is located six kilometres from Bajina Bašta and is considered to have been founded by King Dragutin Nemanjić in the 13th century. In its surroundings, the easy, two-kilometre-long “Račana” educational trail runs from Rača Monastery to the waterfalls of the Lađevac thermal spring. The trail passes through beech forest along the river and begins at the monastery near the nearby archaeological sites. This makes it possible to combine a cultural destination with a short route through nature.

For longer active days, there are currently three developed and signposted cycling routes in the Tara Mountains. The marked cycling connections run along existing forest and public roads and can also be used as hiking trails. One specific event was the 5th “Ćirilična biciklijada”, announced for 30 August 2026. A 13-kilometre circular route between the ćirilice Park, Rača Monastery and the Museum of Cyrillic was planned, with 6.5 kilometres in each direction. Bašta Fest is an annual short feature film festival in Bajina Bašta, held every July. Those seeking sporting challenges can also consider Tribalion: Serbia’s first obstacle race covers almost 20 kilometres of the most difficult mountain terrain and includes 35 demanding obstacles through mud, water and dust.
