In Kamenica, the Lužnica River, hilly terrain and wooded areas come together. The village is interesting for travelers who want to explore landscape and history side by side: a named hiking route leads from here through several waypoints, while historic settlement and family stories offer insights into Kamenica’s past.

Between the Lužnica and the Hills

Kamenica lies on both sides of the Lužnica River. The landscape includes hilly areas, wooded tracts and some flat ground along the river. Historically, the settlement consisted of two parts separated by the river: Belotić was on the left bank of the Lužnica, and Kamenica on the right. The houses, too, stood on elevated ground away from the river. This gives the village two distinct points of reference: the flat areas near the river and the higher residential areas.

A hiking route organized by the local mountaineering club starts in Kamenica and runs via Orlovac, Ravni sto, the Nilovska Pass and Usovica, at 1,375 meters, to Brezna. The sequence of named stops gives the route a clear course through the landscape. For your vacation plans, it is a concrete way to include hiking in your stay; the village’s history offers a different focus.

Local History and Family Origins

A livestock census from 1596 records Kamenica on the Lužnica, in the municipality of Užice, with 275 sheep. It offers a precise glimpse of conditions at the time. The earliest immigrant families came to Kamenica in the second half of the 18th century. The Antonijević family is considered the earliest; they came from Kosatica in Polimlje. Pop Antonije served as a priest at Bela Crkva.

The origins of other families are also linked to Kamenica. The Đokanović family came from Piva and provided several priests and monks to Kamenica and the surrounding villages. The Kovačević and Polić families trace their arrival to Kratovo; the Kovačević family first came to Kamenica as stonemasons. Vasović, also known as Koturović, came from Osat in Bosnia. The Trnavac family in Kamenica came from Trnava in the historic region of Stari Vlah.

An operations report dated December 2, 1914, assigns Kamenica to the Čemernica–Kamenica defense group of the Šumadija Division, 2nd Reserve. Together with the older records and family stories, this offers a glimpse into different periods of the village’s history.
