Paraćin offers a rich cultural and historical heritage, spanning Roman origins, church architecture and memorial sites. The city is 156 km from Belgrade; travel there via the E-75 motorway towards Niš. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether to focus primarily on the city’s history or also include the Grza landscape in your travel plans.

From Sarmantes to the First Written Mention

Paraćin was founded by the Romans under the name Sarmantes on the Via Militaris and served as a horse-changing station along the route. This links the town’s early history to a specific transport route. The first written mention of Paraćin dates to 1375: in a charter issued by Prince Lazar, the settlement was called Parakinov brod. The two names mark different historical reference points—Sarmantes represents the Roman foundation, while Parakinov brod is the name recorded in the medieval charter. This distinction in time makes the town’s history legible in several stages.

The Church of the Holy Trinity

The Church of the Holy Trinity was completed in 1898. It is designed in the Serbo-Byzantine style, with a large dome, while its bell tower is Romanesque. The church’s interior is Baroque, and the icons on the iconostasis were made in Russia. The different stylistic influences are found at various levels: in the church building, the bell tower and the interior. These contrasting designs make the church a multifaceted subject for anyone interested in architecture. The Holy Trinity is also the church’s and the city of Paraćin’s patronal feast.

Memorial Sites and Remembrance

The “Pobednik” monument in the centre of Paraćin bears the names of fighters who fell in the wars of 1912 to 1918. The monument to Branko Krsmanović stands in a central memorial square in Paraćin and was unveiled on 9 May 1981. The two memorials mark different periods: the inscription on the “Pobednik” refers to fighters who fell over a longer period of war, while 9 May 1981 is the unveiling date of the Branko Krsmanović monument. Above Paraćin, Karadjordjevo Brdo served as a position for Serbian rebels during the 1805 uprising; some of the trenches there have been preserved to this day.

Museum and Beekeeping Tradition

The Paraćin Local History Museum has departments for archaeology, history and ethnology. It thus offers three distinct disciplinary approaches to the past and culture. The honey and beekeeping fair in Paraćin provides a different focus. It offers various types of honey, propolis, balms, drinks made with honey and bee products, as well as other bee products. The event has a tradition spanning several decades. Alongside architecture and historical memorial sites, honey and beekeeping products are also among the things that define Paraćin.

Grza: Springs, Lakes and Hiking Trails

Grza is 17 km from Paraćin, on the road to Zaječar, and offers springs, lakes and numerous hiking trails. This landscape destination is distinct from Paraćin’s Roman past, church and memorial sites. When looking for a holiday apartment, this gives you a concrete choice to make: would you like to focus on Paraćin’s history or include Grza’s natural attractions in your travel plans? The two destinations appeal to different interests and can influence which area you choose to stay in.
