Despotovac can be explored through a wide range of themes: Resava Cave with its crystal formations, the 25-metre-high Lisina Waterfall, the medieval history of Manasija and the industrial heritage of Senjski Rudnik. The range of themes extends from geological formations and forest landscapes to monastic culture, manuscripts and mining. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can base your choice on what matters most for your stay: nature, cultural history or technology.

Cave and Waterfall

Resava Cave lies in the limestone hill of Babina glava in eastern Serbia, in the wider area around Despotovac; it is estimated to be 80 million years old. A well-maintained path leads through all eight chambers on the upper and lower levels. White, yellow and red crystal formations can be found in the Crystal Hall. The cave therefore combines a clearly structured sequence of chambers with a striking contrast of colours.

Lisina, also known as Veliki Buk, offers a different natural attraction. The waterfall is 25 metres high and lies in the area around Despotovac at the foot of the Beljanica Mountains, within the municipality of Despotovac. Dense forests and the limestone cliffs of the mountains surround it. The cave and waterfall offer contrasting highlights: chambers and crystal colours shape the view in Resava Cave, while Lisina brings together a waterfall, forest and limestone landscape.

Manasija and the Resava School

Manasija, also known by the older name Resava, lies on the right bank of the Resava River, not far from Despotovac. A founder’s tomb containing the mortal remains of Despot Stefan Lazarević was discovered at the monastery. The Resava School flourished at Manasija in the first half of the 15th century. Its subjects included orthography, copying manuscripts and translations.

These historical traces point to different aspects of the monastery’s heritage: the tomb discovery is linked to Stefan Lazarević, while the Resava School is associated with work on writing and texts. The Despot Stefan Lazarević Knight Festival also puts the knightly tradition at its centre. Representatives of numerous associations from around twenty countries take part in a re-created medieval village near the monastery.

Industrial History in Senjski Rudnik

In the wider area around Despotovac, Senjski Rudnik tells a different story. The settlement was founded in 1853 and is Serbia’s oldest still-operating brown coal mine, as well as its oldest preserved industrial heritage site. The Mining Museum in Senjski Rudnik is a technical museum dedicated to coal mining; it presents artefacts and the social history of the settlement. The museum’s steam engines and lift date from 1874 and are still in operation. Technology and local history go hand in hand here: alongside the machines, the social life of the mining settlement is also part of the museum’s subject matter.

Getting Your Bearings in Despotovac

A four-metre-high monument to Despot Stefan Lazarević was unveiled in a square in Despotovac. Maketa Park is at the edge of town, on the left-hand side of the regional road towards Resava Cave. Despotovačka Banja, a balneological centre, is on the eastern outskirts of the town. These locations are clearly distinct: the monument is in town, the park is at the town’s edge on the road towards the cave, and the centre is on the eastern outskirts.

These themes can help guide your search for a holiday apartment in Despotovac. Consider whether you would like to focus more on natural formations and forest landscapes, monastery history and literary culture, or the industrial past.
