The Municipality of Ćuprija brings together Roman traces, medieval history, literature and movement. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is worth first deciding what matters most to you: should your stay focus mainly on archaeological and historical subjects, put culture at the centre, or leave room for sport and fishing? Local facts offer several distinct starting points.

Roman Traces in the Centre

The Horreum Margi archaeological site lies in the centre of Ćuprija, between the Ravanica and Morava rivers. It preserves the remains of a Roman fortified town dating from the 4th and 5th centuries. The ancient fortification was protected as a cultural asset and archaeological site in 1990. A museum in Ćuprija provides information about the archaeological excavations of the once-important Roman town of Horreum Margi. The site and the excavation topic thus offer two perspectives on the same past: the architectural remains and their archaeological investigation.

A report by RTS dated 2 September 2026 describes parts of the northeastern tower and the ancient fortification walls as visible from all sides; visibility may change during conservation work.

Monastery and Historical Events

Another historical highlight is the nearby Ravanica Monastery. It was built between 1376 and 1381 and was founded by Prince Lazar. Architecturally, it belongs to the so-called Morava School of Byzantine architecture. This designation places Ravanica not only in a particular period but also within a particular style. Together with Horreum Margi, it brings different historical periods and architectural traditions into view.

The nearby Battle of Ivankovac is another historical subject associated with the area. It took place from 18 to 20 August 1805 and was the first victory of Karađorđe's rebels over the regular army of the Ottoman Empire. The precise dates place the event in the early 19th century, clearly distinguishing it chronologically from antiquity and medieval Ravanica.

Music and Literature in Ćuprija

The School for Musical Talents in Ćuprija was founded in 1973. Through an intensive ten-year programme, it trains musically gifted children to become professional musicians. Musical education is therefore a tangible part of the town's cultural profile. The cultural event Matićevi Dani takes place in Ćuprija in early September in honour of the writer and academic Dušan Matić. It supports young literary authors while also commemorating Matić's work. While the school represents long-term training, the event combines support for literature with remembrance of a writer.

Road Running, Cross-Country Running and Fishing

A road race is traditionally held in Ćuprija every year on 13 October. If you are planning your trip specifically around this event, keep the exact date in mind. Another sporting option is the 1,000-metre cross-country course on the left bank of the Velika Morava. It offers suitable conditions for training as well as national and international cross-country races. These present two distinct sporting options: an annual road race with a set date, and a course used for training and competitions.

If you are interested in fishing, you can also consider the artificial Mućava reservoir. It lies northeast of Ćuprija and is suitable for fishing. These different topics give you a concrete starting point for planning: historic sites and events, a cultural occasion, or a stay centred on sport or fishing.
