Brzohode: Landscape, Culture and Traditions
Accommodation in Brzohode
Brzohode combines a distinctive hillside setting with school history, village traditions and stories of earlier settlements. Two hills and the long valley between them shape the village; its cultural connections range from the “Slavko Popović” ensemble to village celebrations in spring and summer. These different aspects can help you plan your travel dates and look for a holiday apartment that suits your interests.
Hills, Valley and Springs
Brzohode lies on the slopes of two hills separated by a long valley. A stream flows through the valley, locally known as “Reka” or “Vrbak”. The landscape can therefore be understood through three connected features: the two slopes, the valley axis and the watercourse. The stream’s different names are also part of the local landscape.
The springs are also associated with different areas. Bučina is the only spring within Brzohode; Studenac is among the springs in the area around the village. Together with the stream in the valley, these names make waterways a tangible part of the local landscape. If you are considering Brzohode for its natural features, they can help you picture the terrain and its layout.
School History and Cultural Life
The school in Brzohode, named after teacher and partisan fighter Slavko Popović, was built in 1912. It is an outpost of the “Dude Jović” primary school in Žabari. Its year of construction, namesake and connection to the primary school link the history of a local school building with a named figure and the municipality’s school system.
Cultural life also has a clear connection to the village: the “Slavko Popović” cultural and artistic ensemble is based in Brzohode and includes the women’s group “Suncokret”. The Municipality of Žabari’s cultural programme for 2023–2030 also lists the “July Days of Folklore” event in Brzohode. The school, ensemble and folklore event thus represent different cultural connections that contribute to the village’s character beyond its landscape.
Village Celebrations and Traces of Earlier Settlements
The village celebration in honour of Saint Nicholas takes place in spring. A second village celebration is dedicated to the Holy Archangel and takes place in summer. The different seasons offer a general guide if you would like to plan your trip around local customs. Check the exact dates in advance when making your plans.
Old coins, sickles and other tools were found at Presedna, southwest of Brzohode, and are considered evidence of an earlier settlement. According to local tradition, Presedna was an earlier settlement site: after attacks by Turkish soldiers, its inhabitants first moved to Selište and later to the present-day site of Brzohode. Another historical trace is Zahumčica, also called Divan-Zahumčica. It is considered an older settlement site; the place is recorded as Zahumčice in accounts dating to the beginning of the 18th century.
