Golubac combines the expanse of the Danube with a striking fortress landscape and a variety of cultural discoveries. At Golubac, the river is more than six kilometres wide—a striking measure of a place where nature, history and active days come together.

Experience the Danube and its cycling routes

If you enjoy exploring the landscape on the move, there is a developed cycling route from Vinci to Golubac. It is 8,790 metres long, runs along the Danube and forms part of the EuroVelo 6 route. This offers a specific way to experience the river landscape by bike. We recommend checking local conditions before setting off.

There is a distinctive experience on the water, too: tourist boat trips take place along the widest stretch of the Danube near Golubac. Check availability in advance before making firm plans for a trip. You can then shape your holiday around whether you would rather be out cycling or experience the Danube from a boat.

The Path of Sumac and Lilac Bushes connects Golubac Fortress with the Zmajev vrt viewpoint. It runs through the Golubac Fortress tourist area and Đerdap National Park. As trail conditions and access may change, check local conditions before your visit.

Fortress and history across different eras

The medieval Golubac Fortress stands on the banks of the Danube, four kilometres from Golubac. It was first mentioned in historical records in 1335. Above Golubac also stands the Roman fortress of Kupe, built between the second and fourth centuries AD. These two structures represent different historical periods and give the area a long historical perspective.

At the Golubac Museum, the permanent exhibition “A Walk Through the History of Golubac” takes you further through time: it spans prehistory and antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Ottoman period, right up to modern history. This lets you explore historical themes in chronological order rather than associating them with just one building.

The townscape also bears traces of different periods. The Church of St Nicholas was built in 1840 on the site of an older church dating from the 18th century and was declared a cultural monument in 1983. The Kosač House on Golubac Square dates from 1890/91 and was built for grain merchant Aleksa Popović. Together, the church and house illustrate different aspects of the town’s architectural history.

Art, events and local cuisine

The Modern Art Gallery is part of the “Veljko Dugošević” National Library and was founded in 2022. It promotes, presents and produces contemporary visual art. The library also marks International Danube Day each year with a variety of cultural events. “Zmajevo Selo” is also part of the Danube Fair in Golubac.

Families can plan their day around different interests: cycling and experiencing the river offer a different focus from museums, art or architecture. The food scene in Golubac includes specialities made with freshly caught Danube fish, meat and locally grown vegetables. Offerings and individual venues may change; if you have a particular meal in mind, it is worth checking what is currently available locally.

There is a tourist information centre on the main street, where you can find information about the town, events and current happenings. If you would like to use this information for your plans, check current opening and access details before your visit.

Find the right holiday apartment for your trip

When looking for a holiday apartment in Golubac, start by considering what you want your trip to focus on: local culture, the Danube, cycling or the historic fortress landscape.
