Several historical themes come together in Rzhev: the Rzhev Local History Museum focuses on everyday life, the culture and architecture of the Rzhev region, and the city’s history during the war. A tour on architectural history explores the city plan and building styles; churches preserve significant ensembles and historic furnishings. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Rzhev, these different themes can guide your plans for visiting museums, architecture, and religious buildings.

Local History Museum: Everyday Life and the History of the War

The Rzhev Local History Museum opened in 1916 and was granted the status of a historical and archaeological museum the following year. Since 1998, it has been housed in two buildings on Krasnoarmeyskaya Embankment on the right bank of the Volga. In one building, materials and exhibits present everyday life in the Rzhev region from the 17th to the 20th century. In the other, across the street, objects and images tell the story of Rzhev during the Great Patriotic War.

The exhibition on the Battle of Rzhev in 1942–1943 is also part of this historical focus. It displays relics from the battlefields and authentic documents from that period. At the heart of the museum is the diorama “Battle for Rzhev on September 24, 1942.” Thus, displays of everyday life across several centuries are paired with an exhibition centered on a specific battle and its historical record.

The history of the older city is also represented by an 18th-century merchant’s house belonging to the local history museum. It was built in the Russian Baroque or early Neoclassical style; the house is associated with a local history exhibition on Rzhev’s early history. The building and exhibition offer another perspective on the city’s past.

City Architecture and Churches

A tour at the Rzhev Museum of Architectural History explores the city’s architecture at the beginning of the 20th century. It includes viewing an architectural model of Rzhev and covers topics such as the city plan, its history and distinctive features, the rhythm of the streets, and the techniques used by old masters. The focus is therefore not only on individual buildings, but also on the layout of the city plan and the design of its streets.

The Okovets Church Complex is considered one of the most significant late Neoclassical architectural monuments in Rzhev and Tver Oblast. Alongside the church, the complex includes a bell tower, a chapel, and a guardhouse. The Pokrovsky Church, by contrast, is notable for its preserved interior furnishings. These include a gilded iconostasis with its complete original set of icons, as well as other icons of historical and artistic value. A multi-part church complex and the furnishings of a single church thus offer different architectural subjects to explore.

The Rzhev Museum and Exhibition Center complements these cultural themes with a wide range of organized activities, including lectures, seminars, festivals, competitions, creative gatherings, concerts, and plein-air events. The center also organizes workshops, schools, courses in various fields of knowledge, and other educational programs.

More Perspectives in Tver Oblast

Tver Oblast also offers a variety of themes for a trip. At the Central Forest Nature Reserve, guided tours are offered along the ecological trails “Tajny Okovskogo lesa” and “Lesnaya azbuka.” The reserve’s natural history museum presents important ecosystems of the protected area and interesting species that live there; a separate hall is devoted to scientific research. The visitor center on the grounds of the central estate also provides information about the reserve’s history and structure, hosts a regular exhibition of children’s work, and has a souvenir shop.

The ecological educational trail “Boloto Staroselskiy mokh” offers a different perspective on nature: it passes through a raised bog with broad, open areas completely covered in moss, as well as unusual plants. Visitors use their own vehicles for the excursion to the “Staroselskiy mokh” raised bog. The hike to Kordon “Barsuchikha” can be taken as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest hut. Along the way, you will see southern taiga forest and a raised bog—two landscape types that define the character of this hike.

Other destinations in Tver Oblast offer culture and history. In the historic center of Torzhok, Verkhnee gorodishche is an archaeological monument of federal significance and a tourist attraction. The Novotorzhsky Borisoglebsky Monastery in Torzhok was founded in 1038 and is one of Russia’s oldest Orthodox monasteries. The Novotorzhsky Kremlin hosts the “Blin s Pripyokom” and “Kuzminki v Torzhke” festivals every year. Nilova Pustyn, meanwhile, is a monastery on Stolobny Island and a center of religious and pilgrimage tourism.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Rzhev, you can first decide whether to focus on the city itself, with its local history museum, architectural history, and churches. If you also include destinations in Tver Oblast, this urban focus can be complemented by a wider selection of nature and cultural themes.
