Verkhnyaya Troitsa: Kalinin House Museum and Local History
Accommodation in Verkhnyaya Troitsa
Verkhnyaya Troitsa brings together Mikhail Kalinin’s life story and a house museum whose rooms and collection offer insights into family history and peasant life. A church in the village and a spring nearby add to this local perspective. Nature and culture are also explored as distinct themes in the wider destination of Tver Oblast.
Kalinin and the House Museum
The Kalinin family home was built between 1913 and 1916. Mikhail Kalinin was born in Verkhnyaya Troitsa on November 19, 1875. In April 1940, local residents opened a memorial museum in the family home on their own initiative. The fact that residents initiated the opening also roots the commemoration in local history.
The house retains its 1927 room layout, which includes the dining room, Mikhail Kalinin’s bedroom, his mother’s room, and a small, dark room. A summer room was also set up in the attic. The exhibition features personal belongings and gifts from Mikhail Kalinin, family photographs, and items from everyday peasant life. In this way, family history and everyday life are presented side by side.
Church and Spring Near the Village
The Church of the Celebration of the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles is located at 2-a Tsentralnaya Street in Verkhnyaya Troitsa. It is open during services. If you plan to visit the church, check the current service times locally.
A spring lies near Verkhnyaya Troitsa, on the right bank of the Medveditsa River. A 2017 library brochure describes the water as clean and reports that residents of nearby villages, dacha owners, and holidaymakers visited the spring year-round to collect water. If you plan to visit, check the current situation locally.
Nature and Culture in Tver Oblast
In the wider destination of Tver Oblast, the Central Forest State Nature Biosphere Reserve offers different ways to experience nature. Guided tours are available on the «Tainy Okovskogo lesa» and «Lesnaya azbuka» ecological trails. The «Boloto Staroselskiy mokh» educational trail leads through a raised bog with vast, open areas covered entirely in moss, as well as unusual plants. Visitors use their own vehicles for excursions to the raised bog.
The reserve’s Nature Museum presents the protected area’s main ecosystems and the species that live there; one of its halls is devoted to scientific research. The reserve’s central estate also has a visitor center with information about the organization’s history and structure, a regular exhibition of children’s work, and a souvenir shop. The Nature Museum and visitor center thus have different focuses: ecosystems and research on the one hand, and information about the organization and the exhibition on the other.
The hike to Kordon «Barsuchikha» can be done as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest cabin. Along the way, you’ll see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. The choice is mainly about the timeframe—a day trip or an overnight stay—while the hike described combines both types of landscape.
Torzhok also offers a distinct cultural focus within Tver Oblast. The historic center is home to «Verkhnee gorodishche», an archaeological monument of federal significance and a tourist attraction. The «Novotorzhskiy Borisoglebskiy monastyr» in Torzhok was founded in 1038 and is among Russia’s oldest Orthodox monasteries. The «Novotorzhskiy kreml» hosts the «Blin s Pripyokom» and «Kuzminki v Torzhke» festivals every year.
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide early what you want to focus on: will your trip mainly include Kalinin House Museum and local history in Verkhnyaya Troitsa, or would you like to include nature and culture in Tver Oblast?
