Predgorny District offers a mix of Terek Cossack culture, religious sites, and designated natural areas. The Old Cossack Farmstead in the stanitsa of Borgustanskaya presents a staged cultural program; on Mount Piket in the stanitsa of Essentukskaya, a church and a metal cross are part of the local landscape. A monastery and mountains add further highlights. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider which of these aspects you want to shape your trip.

Cossack Culture in Borgustanskaya

The Old Cossack Farmstead gives visitors insights into the daily life, culture, customs, and cuisine of the Terek Cossacks. Its staged programs include “Kazachya yarmarka,” “Starinnye posidelki,” “Vstrecha kazakov iz pokhoda,” and “Posvyashchenie v pripisnye kazaki.” The “Volnaya kazachka” folk group from the stanitsa of Borgustanskaya also welcomes visitors at the farmstead. Culture is expressed here both through themed programs and the group’s performances. If you want to plan a visit to the farmstead, check in advance when programs take place.

Church, Cross, and Monastery

A church dedicated to the Holy Great Martyr Khristova Yekaterina was built on Mount Piket in the stanitsa of Essentukskaya; beside it stands a metal cross about 25 meters high. The mountain got its name with the emergence of the health resorts of the Caucasian Mineral Waters region. It is also believed that a Cossack observation post once stood there.

The Convent of St. George stands on Mount Dubrovka. Nuns live there, and helpers and pilgrims visit regularly. Orthodox pilgrims are welcome. Alongside the staged Cossack customs at the farmstead, this is a religious site with its own monastic life and a specifically named group of pilgrims.

Mountains and Designated Protected Areas

Mount Verblyud is designated a natural monument and covers 390 hectares. A municipal post dated March 3, 2025, gives the protected zone for Mount Sheludivaya as 10.91 hectares. These figures refer to different areas: the 390 hectares describe the extent of Mount Verblyud, which is designated a natural monument, while the 10.91 hectares refer to the protected zone for Sheludivaya. This makes it possible to compare the two conservation topics without treating the area figures as equivalent.

More Highlights in Stavropol Krai

In the wider destination of Stavropol Krai, Kislovodsk offers further cultural and natural attractions. Lermontov Rock lies on the southern outskirts of Kislovodsk, in the Olkhovka Gorge near the settlement of Narzanny. Since 1961, it has been a natural monument of regional significance and has been part of the State Mikhail Lermontov Museum-Reserve. The Narzan Gallery in central Kislovodsk, at the entrance to the spa park, is a 19th-century architectural monument and a cultural heritage site of federal significance. Visitors are offered three types of Narzan to taste there: general, dolomite, and sulfate Narzan. If you plan to sample them, check the current visiting conditions.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Predgorny District, one simple question can help: should your trip focus mainly on Cossack culture, religious sites, or natural monuments? If you are planning a trip with children, you can weigh these interests together rather than trying to squeeze every theme into a single itinerary.
