The Dnieper rises in Sychevsky District, Smolensk Oblast. The waters of Sychevskiy District drain into the Volga and Dnieper basins. The district’s main rivers include the Vazuza, Gzhat, Osuga, Kasnya, Losmina and Yablonya. At the source of the Dnieper, river geography, religious architectural history and commemorative culture come together; the park in Dugino draws attention to another facet of the district: landscape gardening and the history of a former estate.

At the source of the Dnieper

The museum at the source of the Dnieper is a branch of the Sychevsky Museum and is accessible to visitors with limited mobility. If this is important for your plans, confirm current access arrangements before your visit. The river’s geographical origins are thus presented from a museum perspective.

In 2010, with support from the Slavic Foundation of Vladimir the Great, a church dedicated to Saint Vladimir the Great, Equal to the Apostles, a chapel above the source and a bell tower were built at the source. The church’s dedication, the chapel’s location and the bell tower represent different types of structures at this site.

The source is also associated with celebrations and commemorative culture. Festivities are held there every year on July 28 to mark the Christianization of Rus'. If you are considering a trip on this date, check the current event schedule in advance. In autumn 1941, the 119th Krasnoyarsk Rifle Division fought at the source; a memorial plaque commemorates the Krasnoyarsk soldiers. The annual celebration and the memorial plaque represent different historical associations of this place.

The history of Dugino Park

Dugino Park has been a natural monument of regional significance since 1975. It was protected for its historical and commemorative value as a landscape gardening monument of the 18th and 19th centuries. The park once belonged to the Dugino estate. The Counts Panin and Princes Meshchersky owned the estate from 1773 to 1918. This period refers to the estate’s ownership history; 1975 marks the park’s designation for protection.

The park description lists more than 50 species of trees and shrubs. It also reports that many old trees have been preserved, including specimens that were in good condition at the time of the description. Dugino thus brings together the estate’s history, protected landscape gardening and its documented tree collection as distinct themes.

Choose the focus of your trip

You can distinguish between the interests that shape your travel plans: the source of the Dnieper offers river geography, a museum, religious buildings and commemoration, while Dugino features the history of the park and estate, as well as its trees. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Sychevskiy District, first consider which focus you would like to shape your stay. Then narrow your search to a location that suits your planned itinerary.
