Accommodation in Dukhovshchina
Dukhovshchina offers two specific cultural landmarks: the Dukhovshchina Historical and Art Museum in the town centre and the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit at 54 Sovetskaya Street. The church also has a dated event associated with it: its cross and dome were consecrated on 19 March 2025. This provides a cultural focus for a stay in the town, while the natural and excursion destinations of Smolensk Oblast form a distinct regional focus.
Culture in Dukhovshchina and Smolensk Oblast
For orientation in Dukhovshchina, the museum and the church address are clearly identified landmarks. The consecration of the cross and dome was a one-time historical event, not an annual recurring occasion. Those exploring the town and its surroundings can distinguish this local cultural focus from the broader destinations in Smolensk Oblast.
The Gnyozdovo archaeological complex is located there. Around 2,500 burial mounds and a settlement have survived to this day. Gnyozdovo is considered the largest complex of archaeological monuments in Russia and Europe from the period when the Old Russian state was emerging, and it is protected by the state as a monument of federal significance. The surviving burial mounds and settlement provide two distinct archaeological points of interest.
The Khmelita estate offers a different historical focus: it has been owned by the Griboyedov family since 1680 and is the centre of the A. S. Griboyedov State Museum Reserve “Khmelita”. Those interested in the literary and cultural heritage of the region can include the estate as a subject of its own in their travel plans.
Nature experiences and trails in Smolensk Oblast
Smolenskoye Poozerye National Park was established on 15 April 1992 in the territory of Demidovsky and Dukhovshchinsky districts. Its purpose is to protect unique natural complexes for recreational, educational, scientific and cultural purposes. A viewpoint on the high southern shore of Lake Sapsho offers views of the lake and several islands.
For an independent hike, the “K istokam” nature trail offers a different way to experience the landscape: the circular route starts in the village of Stary Dvor, and a track for apps such as Geotreker or MAPS.ME helps visitors follow it independently. There are two viewpoints along the trail at Lakes Svyatets and Sapsho, established in 2023–2024. The route and app track provide practical guidance for planning, without indicating a walking time.
The barefoot trail in Boroviki offers a nature experience divided into shorter sections. It consists of 14 sections, each six metres long, with different natural surfaces to walk on barefoot. At the end, you can wash your feet and, if you wish, stroll through the Aptekarsky Sad. The sequence of different surfaces makes this trail a different experience from the circular route through the landscape.
Guided experiences and regional planning
At the “Stargrad” ethnographic village, a guided tour introduces visitors to the way of life of the ancient Slavs; everyday objects, weapons and clothing are also on display. Visits are possible only as part of a guided group. The extended programme includes the “Babiy kut” workshop on traditional women’s crafts, where visitors can make souvenirs themselves, as well as “Polevaya Kuznya”, featuring coin minting and chainmail making. In the “Srednevekovy tir” area, visitors can shoot a bow and sling, and throw axes and sulitsy. The extended programme should be arranged in advance.
A water-based activity in the Viking oak boat “Fornkor” is also part of the extended programme: participants can sail and row on one of the national park’s deepest lakes. The programme also includes a lunch made from old recipes, with historical dishes from maritime and marching and field cuisine, prepared in cauldrons over an open fire.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Dukhovshchina, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: would you like to centre your stay on the cultural landmarks in town, or plan visits to destinations in different parts of Smolensk Oblast? This distinction makes the choice of destination more tangible and helps you match your accommodation to your planned experiences.
