Saratov District offers a clear focus on nature, complemented by a glimpse of history in Konstantinovka. Ancient forests, striking landforms and sweeping views across the Volga give you specific themes to shape your trip around. This lets you decide whether nature or architectural history should take centre stage.

Forests with distinct characteristics

The landscape and botanical natural monument “Urochishche «Popovskiye sosnyaki»” includes mature pine stands of natural and artificial origin. The stands are 100 to 200 years old; some are among the oldest of their kind in Saratov Oblast. Their origins and age give you two specific perspectives on this forest landscape: its different beginnings and a long history of growth.

The natural monument “Burkin les” has a different emphasis: it is a protected landscape and botanical area with upland and ravine oak forests, birch and lime stands, as well as native plant communities in valley hollows. This brings a range of tree species and plant communities into focus alongside the pines. If you enjoy comparing landscapes by their vegetation, these natural monuments offer distinct, specifically described impressions.

Summit formations and Volga views

Near Bagaevka, Budanova gora is an erosional remnant with a flat summit and an elevation of up to 236 metres. From Budanova gora, the view extends across the Volga, the southern part of Saratov and the surrounding villages. The view and the mountain’s distinctive shape describe two different aspects of this landscape feature.

The complex natural monument “Urochishche «Pudovkin buerak»” offers a different perspective. It is typical of the Saratov Volga region and characteristic of the right bank of the Volga. While the summit shape and the view are central at Budanova gora, this natural monument describes the landscape character of the Volga’s right bank.

A glimpse of history in Konstantinovka

The former watermill “Melnitsa Borelya” in Konstantinovka adds a cultural and historical dimension. By decree of the Ministry of Culture of Saratov Oblast dated 19 June 2001, it was classified as a newly registered cultural heritage site. Its former use as a watermill and its dated heritage designation offer a different perspective on the history of Saratov District than its natural monuments.

More to discover in the wider destination of Saratov Oblast

In the wider destination of Saratov Oblast, Volsk offers its own urban and architectural focus. The city’s history dates back to the late 17th century: the village of Malykovka was originally located there; in 1780, a decree by Catherine II made it the district town of Volgsk, later Volsk. 120 stone mansions were built in Volsk, many of which have survived to this day. Volsk is the only city in Saratov Oblast with the status of a historic settlement of federal significance.

Individual buildings from the early 19th century, as well as entire architectural ensembles, have been preserved in the central square. According to a plan, Volsk was laid out with a regular street grid and rectangular city blocks, as is characteristic of Saint Petersburg. Notable buildings also include Volsk’s Gostiny Dvor, the former trading arcades: its imposing colonnade stretches across an entire city block. The Cathedral of the Life-Giving Trinity, Volsk’s main church, was built in 2009 on the site of the Trinity Cathedral, which was destroyed in 1934.

Activities are also part of the wider destination of Saratov Oblast: Gagarin’s Conquerors of Space Park has designated paths for walking and cycling. At a ceramics workshop in Volsk, you can buy Volsk ceramics with an indented pattern and take part in a toy-painting class. Check the current availability of the class before your visit.
