Kalininskiy District offers two distinct reasons to visit: a protected geological site and a church with a distinctive architectural history in Kalininsk. Natural history and architecture provide different focal points when choosing your destination.

Geology and Church History in Kalininskiy District

Kalininskiy District is home to the regional protected area “Karjer «Pervomayskoye» (Bezobrazovka),” a protected geological site. Geology is therefore a specific theme of the district. Travellers who also take a region’s natural and geological history into account when planning a trip will find a clearly defined point of interest here.

The Church of Saint Olga, Equal to the Apostles, in Kalininsk is located in a merchant’s house dating from the 19th century. In 1989, the building was transferred for ecclesiastical use by order of the Kalininskiy District administration. Two points in the building’s history and use therefore converge here: the construction of the house and its later transfer.

Volsk and Khvalynsky National Park offer further perspectives on urban history, crafts and wildlife in Saratov Oblast. The following examples are part of this wider travel destination.

Volsk’s history dates back to the late 17th century; the village of Malykovka was originally located here. In 1780, by decree of Catherine II, the village became the district town of Volgsk (Volsk), later Volsk. The town saw the construction of 120 stone mansions, many of which have survived to this day. Volsk is the only town in Saratov Oblast with the status of a historic settlement of federal significance.

The townscape also offers a range of architectural landmarks. Individual buildings dating from the early 19th century, as well as entire architectural ensembles, have been preserved on Volsk’s central square. The Gostiny Dvor, the former trading rows, features a grand colonnade stretching along an entire city block. According to a plan, Volsk was laid out with a regular street grid and rectangular blocks, characteristic of Saint Petersburg.

Volsk’s main church, the Cathedral of the Life-Giving Trinity, was built in 2009 on the site of the Trinity Cathedral, which was destroyed in 1934. Another historical connection can be found at Children’s Art School No. 1: it is housed in the former People’s Library named after Emperor Alexander II. The building was constructed in 1898 to commemorate the victory in the War of 1812.

On Volsk’s waterfront promenade are a monument to Soviet statesman K. E. Voroshilov, a stele bearing the town’s founding date, and a monument to the sailors and fighters of the Volsk Red Flotilla. These three memorials reflect different historical associations of the place.

A workshop in Volsk combines crafts with a hands-on activity: you can buy Volsk ceramics with a recessed pattern and take a toy-painting class. If you plan to take the class, ask in advance whether it is currently available.

The animal rehabilitation centre in Khvalynsky National Park is home to, among others, camels, deer, roe deer, wild boar, eagles and golden pheasants. The animals and birds housed there also include rare species listed in the Red Data Book of Saratov Oblast.
