Vladikavkaz: Parkland and Culture
Accommodation in Vladikavkaz
Vladikavkaz combines distinctive parkland with urban culture. Kosta Khetagurov Park brings together botanical highlights and landscape art, while Mukhtarov Mosque is one of the city’s landmarks. If you’re looking for a vacation rental in Vladikavkaz, these themes may shape your travel plans: should you focus on the city’s green spaces and sights, or would you also like to include natural and cultural destinations in the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania?
Parkland with its own character
Kosta Levanovich Khetagurov Park of Culture and Recreation is one of the oldest parks in the North Caucasus. Its features include exotic plants, shady avenues, deep ponds, and grottoes. The cycling paths are covered with yellow sand, adding a distinctive touch to the park’s design. Kosta Khetagurov Park is a monument of landscape art and has been protected by the state since 1981 as a botanical natural monument of all-Russian significance. For park enthusiasts, it therefore combines the variety of features described with a clearly defined protected status.
A landmark on the Terek
Mukhtarov Mosque, also known as the Sunni Mosque, is one of the landmarks of Vladikavkaz. It is located on Kotsoev Street, on the left bank of the Terek. Its name, status as a landmark, and specific location give urban culture a prominent place alongside the parkland, while the two sights appeal to different interests.
Nature and trails in the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania
The glacial landscape in the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania can be put into perspective using two regional facts: Karaugom Glacier is the largest glacier in North Ossetia; from the moraine, you can see the glacier and its icefall, which is up to 800 m high. Tseysky Glacier is the second largest in the region. Galdoridon offers a different landscape: the waterfall has five tiers, is more than 30 m high, and is a natural attraction in Alania National Park. The loop trail starts on the left terrace of the Khareseidon River, passes through the beginning of the Khares Gorge, and runs at an elevation of 1,800 to 2,200 m. Chifandzar, meanwhile, is a raised bog of lacustrine origin and a natural monument in Alania National Park.
The trails also vary in the landscapes they traverse. The trail to Shagatsikomdon Waterfall follows the left terrace of the Tseydon River through a pine forest with Oriental beech, Trautvetter’s maple, and gray alder growing in brown mountain-forest podzolic soils. It climbs steeply over an outcrop of gray granite, descends to the riverbank, and leads hikers to the lower cascade of the waterfall. The trail to Shalagom viewpoint starts in the village of Kharisdzhin and leads through the Khilak Gorge to the Shalagom tract. The largest local population of endemic East Caucasian tur is found on the left slope of the gorge, in the North Ossetian Nature Reserve; it may also be the largest in all of North Ossetia. From Shalagom viewpoint, you can observe the animals in their natural habitat in the subalpine and alpine zones of the Bokovoy Range, although sightings are not guaranteed.
Cultural history and travel planning
The historical diversity of the republic includes the Khilak (Gutievskaya) defensive wall, which scientists believe was built between the 5th and 8th centuries AD. The Dargavs Necropolis Complex is a cultural monument of federal significance. It is located in the old village of Dargavs, in the valley of the same name, 42 km from Vladikavkaz, and comprises 95 tomb structures of various types dating from the 14th century to the first third of the 19th century. Since 1978, the complex has been a branch of the National Museum of the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania. Its architecture and burial customs reflect the socioeconomic conditions and religious beliefs of the Ossetian population in the late Middle Ages.
When choosing accommodation, you can start by considering what you want your stay to focus on: parks and urban culture in Vladikavkaz, or the natural and cultural attractions of the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania as well. This way, you can tailor your search for a vacation rental to the kind of trip you’re planning, rather than grouping different destinations under a single focus.
