Nizhniy Lars: St. Nicholas Church and the Darial Gates
Accommodation in Nizhniy Lars
Nizhniy Lars offers a specific reason to consider architectural history and the landscape together: St. Nicholas Church dates back to the 19th century, and the Iron Gates of Darial begin near Nizhniy Lars. The village is also historically regarded as a military outpost.
Church, History and Darial
The Orthodox church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the Wonderworker and Archbishop of Myra in Lycia. It was built in 1839 and renovated and reconsecrated in 1895. Only the walls of the original St. Nicholas Church remain; deep cracks are visible in places. Those interested in the history of churches and the village will find a clearly dated sequence here: construction was followed by renovation and reconsecration.
Nizhniy Lars is also regarded as a historic military outpost. This adds a second perspective on the village alongside its architectural history. Its setting provides another point of interest: the Iron Gates of Darial begin near Nizhniy Lars. This destination therefore brings together historical themes and a distinctive geographical feature.
Natural and Cultural Attractions in the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania
Across the wider destination of the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania, the routes described here offer a variety of landscapes and points of interest. The viewpoint, waterfall trails and glacier destination can each be considered as separate travel interests; they offer distinct experiences rather than describing a single one.
The route to the Shalagom viewpoint begins in the village of Kharisdzhin and runs through the Khilak Gorge to the Shalagom tract. On the left slope of the gorge, the North Ossetian Nature Reserve is home to the largest local population of endemic East Caucasian tur, possibly also the largest in all of North Ossetia. From the Shalagom viewpoint, the animals can be observed in their natural habitat in the subalpine and alpine zones of the Bokovoy Range. Sightings are not guaranteed.
The trail to the Shagatsikomdon waterfall follows the left terrace of the Tseydon River through a pine forest with Oriental beech, Trautvetter's maple and grey alder. The route climbs steeply over an outcrop of grey granite, then descends to the riverbank and continues to the lower cascade. Unlike the viewpoint, where wildlife may be spotted, this route focuses on the forest, the granite and the descent to the water.
The trail to the Tseysky Glacier begins on a large meadow at 1,958 metres above sea level, on the steep left bank of the Tseydon River. The glacier is the second largest in North Ossetia. Its precisely identified starting point and elevation give this destination a different character from the routes to the viewpoint and waterfall.
One cultural highlight in the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania is the Darghavs Necropolis Complex in the old village of Dargavs. It comprises 95 burial structures of various types, dating from the 14th century to the first third of the 19th century. Their architecture and burial customs reflect the socioeconomic conditions and religious beliefs of the Ossetian population in the late Middle Ages. Alongside natural attractions, visitors can therefore also explore the region's distinctive history.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether to make Nizhniy Lars, with its church and local history, the focus of your trip, or whether you would also like to include natural and cultural attractions in the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania.
