Pudozh: Historic Buildings and Squares
Accommodation in Pudozh
Pudozh combines a clearly defined historic part of the town with buildings of different styles. The Pudozh Local History Museum is housed in a building constructed in 1914 in the historic part of the town; the Alexander Nevsky Church in Pudozh is built in the Russian style. The town’s history thus offers both a datable building and a specific architectural style to explore. Anyone interested in history and architecture will find two different starting points for learning about the place. Before visiting, check the museum’s current visitor regulations.
Historic Places and Architectural Heritage in Pudozh
Four buildings from the ensemble of the former market square have survived to this day. They are cultural heritage sites and form key elements of the square. The former fairground, now Fallen Heroes’ Square, comprises a complex of residential and public buildings. These landmarks draw attention both to individual buildings and to squares whose history is linked to different types of buildings.
A historic park borders a building to the west. Linden, larch, maple, oak, and bird cherry trees grow in the park. As a landscape feature, the trees complement the view of the historic architecture and square ensembles.
Experiences in the wider destination of the Republic of Karelia
The wider destination of the Republic of Karelia offers a range of experiences, including nature, wooden architecture, and prehistoric rock art. A general excursion in Kivach Nature Reserve includes an outdoor walk to Kivach Waterfall, as well as a visit to the dendrological collection and the Natural History Museum. The waterfall is on the Suna River in central Karelia; it is 10.7 metres high. After the Rhine Falls, it is Europe’s second-largest lowland waterfall.
A 1,000-metre circular trail runs through a wooded area on the banks of the Suna, near the nature reserve’s excursion area. The excursion lasts 1 to 1.5 hours. Check conditions and booking with the operator.
The Kizhi Museum Reserve displays 89 monuments of traditional wooden architecture in the open air, including old chapels and houses, mills, granaries, threshing barns, and drying racks. Visitors can see inside the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God and peasant houses; traditional peasant crafts are demonstrated in the houses. Kizhi thus combines historic buildings with insights into peasant craft traditions.
The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Onega and White Sea Petroglyphs includes 4,500 Neolithic rock carvings in the Republic of Karelia. The Onega Petroglyphs comprise more than 1,200 figures in Pudozhsky District; most are located on the three central capes of Pery Nos, Besov Nos, and Kladovets. The White Sea Petroglyphs mainly depict hunting and sailing scenes with related equipment, as well as animal and human footprints. The Belomorsk Petroglyphs are located in the lower reaches of the Vyg, near its mouth at the White Sea, 6–8 kilometres from Belomorsk, and comprise more than 2,000 different drawings.
