Rautalakhti brings together a preserved school history, sacred wooden architecture and a mineral museum. The building of a Finnish school has been preserved and was used as a school until the early 2000s. There is also a wooden church on a granite hilltop and a collection of minerals and rock samples. This gives you several ways to get to know the place: through its former use as a school, its buildings and the rocks of Karelia.

School History and Wooden Church

The wooden church was built from 2009 onwards to a design by Sergey Volov. It is dedicated to the Valaam wonderworkers Sergius and Herman. Its location on a high granite hilltop connects the history of the building with the use of the site: stone was quarried there previously. The wooden construction, religious dedication and former stone quarry each offer a distinct starting point for discovering Rautalakhti.

The preserved building of the Finnish school marks a different period. It served as a school until the early 2000s. Together with the church, it shows how different buildings can convey very different aspects of local history: the former educational use in one case, and a building project that began in 2009 in the other. The school history and the church are separate topics.

Minerals and Karelian Wooden Buildings

The “U Mastera” museum in Rautalakhti displays minerals and rock samples from the northern Lake Ladoga area and other parts of Karelia. The collection adds a geological perspective to the attractions of the place. Another cultural theme is the “Severnaya Fivaida” project, which includes replicas of seven well-known wooden churches and chapels in Karelia. The buildings depicted include the Church of Sergius and Herman of Valaam, as well as chapels dedicated to Alexander Svirsky and Sergius of Radonezh. This project should be distinguished from the wooden church in Rautalakhti, which is also dedicated to Sergius and Herman.

Nature Experiences in the Republic of Karelia

The Republic of Karelia also offers a range of nature experiences. An overview excursion in Kivach Nature Reserve includes an outdoor walk to Kivach Waterfall, as well as visits to the dendrological collection and the nature museum. The waterfall is on the Suna River in central Karelia, and its drop is 10.7 metres high. A 1,000-metre circular trail runs through a forest area on the banks of the Suna near the excursion zone. The excursion lasts 1 to 1.5 hours. Check conditions and booking with the operator.

Cultural Destinations on a Regional Scale

The Kizhi Museum Reserve in the Republic of Karelia displays 89 monuments of traditional wooden architecture in the open air. These include chapels and houses, as well as mills, granaries, threshing barns and drying racks. Visitors can see inside the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God and peasant houses, where traditional peasant crafts are demonstrated. Kizhi therefore offers a look not only at individual architectural forms, but also at different historical uses and craft traditions.

The Onega and White Sea petroglyphs in the Republic of Karelia offer another cultural perspective: this World Heritage site comprises 4,500 Neolithic rock carvings. More than 1,200 figures belong to the Onega petroglyphs in Pudozhsky District; most are located on the capes of Pery Nos, Besov Nos and Kladovets. The White Sea petroglyphs mainly depict hunting and sailing scenes, including equipment, as well as animal and human footprints. The Belomorsk petroglyphs are located in the lower reaches of the Vyg River near its mouth at the White Sea, 6 to 8 kilometres from Belomorsk, and comprise more than 2,000 different carvings.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Rautalakhti, it helps to distinguish between the village’s own attractions and destinations across the wider travel destination of the Republic of Karelia. This lets you first decide whether to focus your stay mainly on local building and geological history or on a broader cultural and nature programme.
