Discover Chalna: Culture, Crafts and Huskies
Accommodation in Chalna
Exhibitions, crafts and encounters with animals give Chalna its varied character. The Talviukko estate focuses on cultural activities and sled dog experiences, while the Tuomi Ethnocultural Centre offers workshops and groups from the region. Which of these appeals to you most may also guide your choice of holiday rental in Chalna.
Exhibitions and Sámi Culture at Talviukko
At the Lumikki Palace on the Talviukko estate, the “Armas Karjala” exhibition showcases sights from Karelia. The “Skasotschnaja strana” exhibition is also on display there. Together, the two exhibitions make the palace a destination for visitors who want to discover Chalna through its cultural offerings as well.
A different perspective awaits you in the Sámi village on the same estate. It features faithful replicas of dismantlable Kuuvak dwellings. Visitors can learn about Sámi life and culture and visit a Sámi family. This is a designed cultural attraction, not a historic Sámi settlement site. This distinction helps visitors understand the dwellings as part of a present-day presentation.
Crafts and Music at the “Tuomi” Centre
The Tuomi Ethnocultural Centre offers courses in weaving, patchwork sewing, artistic painting and birch-bark weaving. There are also courses in making national dolls and traditional costumes. The range therefore spans textile techniques, birch-bark work, and the design of clothing and figures. If you are interested in a particular course, it is best to check the date in advance.
The centre is also home to the Finnish vocal ensemble “Tuomi” and the Karelian group “Besedajne”. These singing and cultural groups complement the course programme. When planning your visit, you can decide whether you are mainly interested in learning a craft yourself or in the cultural groups.
Sled Dogs, an Eco Trail and Reindeer
The Talviukko estate is home to a kennel for sporting sled dogs. It has Alaskan Huskies, Samoyeds, Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies, which visitors can meet and photograph. An instructor should accompany visitors entering the kennel.
The eco trail starts at the kennel, runs along the edge of the estate beside a forest and loops back to the starting point. After an introduction to the sled dogs and a briefing, visitors can ride in a husky-drawn cart; dog trekking is also available. The same estate therefore offers a choice between meeting the dogs and getting active on the trail.
At the reindeer farm, visitors can interact with reindeer and feed them lichens during the Northern Saga excursion. This experience offers a different focus from the dog-cart ride: instead of a route with sled dogs, it is about meeting reindeer.
Choosing Chalna as a Holiday Destination
When choosing a holiday rental, you can shape your stay around your interests: exhibitions and Sámi culture at Talviukko, craft courses and groups at the Tuomi Centre, or activities with dogs and reindeer.
Chalna can be reached by suburban buses that travel along Suoyarvi Road. Check the current service before setting out. If a particular activity is central to your plans, also enquire in advance about dates or current availability.
