Belomorsky District: Landscapes, history and rock art
Accommodation in Belomorsky District
In Belomorsky District, distinctive landforms meet archaeological traces and rock art. Particularly appealing is the contrast between the landforms of the Soroksky Nature Reserve, the historic site of Sumsky Ostrog and a route to groups of petroglyphs. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can treat these interests as separate focal points: Would you like to focus primarily on landforms, explore the history of the Karelian Pomorye, or make rock carvings the theme of your trip?
Rock formations, islands and deltas
The Soroksky Nature Reserve includes bedrock outcrops called Medvezhi Golovy and Morskaya Malya, islands of crystalline rock, dunes, lakes and fluvioglacial deltas. The range therefore extends from distinctive rock formations to dunes and delta landscapes. This variety is what makes the reserve particularly interesting: it is not limited to a single rock formation but encompasses different landforms. If you are especially interested in nature and landscapes, this offers a distinct focus alongside the district’s historical and archaeological sites.
The site of Sumsky Ostrog
In Sumsky Posad is the regional cultural heritage site “Pamyatnoye mesto, gde nakhodilsya Sumsky ostrog (konets XVI–XVII vv.)”. The Solovetsky Monastery built Sumsky Ostrog in 1582–1583 to defend the Karelian Pomorye against Swedish raids. The fortification’s buildings have not survived; traces of the ditch and earthen rampart remain at the site. The boundaries of the heritage site have also been established. The focus here, then, is not on visiting surviving fortification buildings, but on the history of the site and the traces still visible in the terrain. The fortification’s defensive purpose places the site within the history of the Karelian Pomorye.
An educational trail to groups of petroglyphs
The “Kamennaya kniga Belogo morya” route leads from Vygostrov along an ecological educational trail through the forest toward Zalavruga. Its itinerary includes the petroglyph groups “Yerpin Pudas III”, “Yerpin Pudas IV” and “Zalavruga”. This makes rock art a distinct reason to travel, alongside the landscape and the history of the fortification. The route description includes a section in Belomorsky District. Check current local regulations before travelling.
Petroglyphs and wooden architecture in the Republic of Karelia
In the wider travel destination of the Republic of Karelia, the World Heritage property of the Onega and White Sea Petroglyphs comprises 4,500 Neolithic rock carvings. The White Sea Petroglyphs mainly depict hunting and sailing scenes, along with related equipment, as well as animal and human footprints. The Onega Petroglyphs include more than 1,200 figures in Pudozhsky District; most are located on the three central capes of Pery Nos, Besov Nos and Kladovets. These regional examples add context to the petroglyph groups on the route without equating them with the Onega groups.
The Kizhi Museum Reserve is also part of the wider travel destination of the Republic of Karelia. Its open-air collection features 89 monuments of traditional wooden architecture, including old chapels and houses, mills, storehouses, threshing barns and drying racks. Visitors can explore the interior of the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God and peasant houses; traditional peasant crafts are demonstrated in the houses. Thus, regional travel planning brings together prehistoric rock art and traditional wooden architecture as distinct cultural themes.
Choose the right focus
When looking for a holiday apartment in Belomorsky District, the experiences you want to focus on can help guide your choice: landforms in the Soroksky Nature Reserve, the history of Sumsky Ostrog or the petroglyph route. If you would like to combine several interests, you can treat them as distinct focuses for your trip rather than combining them into a single excursion. You can also include Lekhta in your search.
