Discover a variety of travel experiences in Uchalinsky District: Lake Karagaily lies in a mountain hollow, a path at Lake Kalkan leads up to Jasper Rock, there are marked trails and rides on the Nurali Ridge, and a megalithic complex stands in Akhunovo. The attractions range from water and mountain ridges to a site made up of menhirs.

Lakes and ridges

Lake Karagaily, also known as Vorozheich, lies between the Uraltau, Kumach and Irendyk ridges, amid wooded steppe hills. Its location in a mountain hollow, together with the surrounding ridges and hills, shapes the landscape. The lake covers 3.8 km², is 2.4 km long and 1.5 km wide; its maximum depth is 3.2 m. These figures describe both the lake’s size and depth, complementing the description of its surroundings.

Lake Kalkan and Jasper Rock

Lake Kalkan is considered the most popular body of water in Uchalinsky District among tourists and holidaymakers. A path worn by many tourists leads over the ridge of Jasper Rock; it can be followed safely all the way to the top. Lake Kalkan thus brings together a named body of water and a specific climb. The route goes over the rocky ridge and offers a different focus from the landscape description of Lake Karagaily.

Trails and rides on the Nurali Ridge

Visitors go on rides along the Nurali Ridge in jeeps, quad bikes, motorcycles and bicycles. The ridge can be visited year-round via well-marked trails. In rainy weather, the trail can become slippery—a practical condition to bear in mind when planning a visit. The various vehicles mentioned offer additional ways to explore the ridge alongside walking its trails. Unlike the climb described at Lake Kalkan, the Nurali Ridge offers both marked trails and rides.

The Akhunovo menhirs

The Akhunovo menhirs form a megalithic complex of 13 stones. Ten make up the main arrangement, while three stand separately. This breakdown gives a clear picture of the complex’s layout: the total includes both the ten stones in the arrangement and the three freestanding menhirs. Anyone interested in megalithic sites will find a specific point of interest here in Uchalinsky District.

The Toratau UNESCO Global Geopark is located within the wider travel destination of the Republic of Bashkortostan. It includes geological outcrops near Usolka and Dalny Tulkas, as well as caves, waterfalls, gorges, mountain rivers and rugged rocky outcrops. The geopark also includes the Shikhany mountains of Toratau, Yuraktau and Kushtau. They are the remains of a barrier reef that formed around 280 to 300 million years ago. Cultural attractions are also part of this regional setting: the geopark preserves the ruins of ancient settlements and fortresses and showcases local cultural heritage, cuisine and crafts.

Bashkiria National Park was established in 1986 to protect the natural resources of the Southern Urals and was the first and only national park in Bashkortostan.
