Geology, protected nature and culture offer several distinct ways to explore the Republic of Bashkortostan. The Toratau UNESCO Global Geopark, located in the republic, is particularly striking. It includes geological exposures near Usolka and Dalny Tulkas, as well as caves, waterfalls, gorges, mountain rivers and rugged rock formations. The range extends from underground features to river and rock landscapes. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether geology, nature watching or culture will be the focus of your stay.

Geological Landscapes and Protected Areas

The Shikhany mountains Toratau, Yuraktau and Kushtau are remnants of a barrier reef that formed around 280 to 300 million years ago. This approximate time span is among the geopark’s most striking geological details, linking three named mountains to a distant geological past. The Bashkiriya National Park offers a different focus on nature: it was established in 1986 to protect the natural resources of the Southern Urals and was the first and only national park in Bashkortostan. Geology and nature conservation thus offer two distinct ways to explore the region.

Cultural Heritage in the Geopark

Cultural heritage is also part of the geopark. It preserves the ruins of ancient settlements and fortresses and showcases local cuisine and crafts. For your trip planning, this offers a different perspective from a day focused solely on landscapes: alongside geological themes, there is history, regional food culture and craft traditions. If you don’t want to plan your days around nature alone, this mix gives you a reason to consider culture and cuisine when choosing destinations, too.

Biodiversity and Guided Trails

The Bashkiriya National Park is home to 231 bird species, 148 of which breed there. The park’s waters are also home to 32 fish species. The figures distinguish between the total number of bird species and those that breed in the park, while the fish figure refers to its waters. They offer nature enthusiasts specific points of interest in birdlife and aquatic environments; the species figures given may change as surveys are updated.

The guided ecological trail “Za sladkim zolotom na goru Tirmentau” is about 2 km long, operates from 15 May to 31 October and must be booked in advance. It is intended for children aged 8 and over accompanied by adults, as well as active visitors, photographers, journalists, VIPs and local history enthusiasts.

The guided ecological trail “Skaly nad pasekoy” is 1.4 km long, operates from 15 May to 31 October and is available by advance booking only. A member of the scientific staff explains the protected area’s plant life, including species listed in the Red Books of the Republic of Bashkortostan and Russia. At 1.4 km, this route is shorter than the roughly 2 km Tirmentau trail. Both are listed as operating during the same season; check current dates and conditions with the protected area before your trip.

A 2024 directory lists ecological routes and trails for visitors in the national park, including “Tally,” “Kutuk-Sumgan,” “Beyek-Tau” and “Kuperlya.” Before making specific plans, check whether these trails are currently operating.
