Water takes different forms in Nurimanovsky District: as a karst spring, as a lake with an underground river course, and as part of protected landscapes. The Krasnyy Klyuch spring is a karst spring and is considered Russia’s most powerful karst water spring and Europe’s second largest. It is also a hydrological natural monument of federal significance and is part of the regional protected area “Istochnik Krasnyy Klyuch.”

Springs and Underground River Courses

The Sarva spring lake, “Sarvinskoye Ozero,” is also a karst formation. This is where the Saula River emerges from underground. It rises on the northwestern slope of the Kara-Tau Ridge, disappears underground several times, and flows below ground before emptying into Lake Sarva. While Krasnyy Klyuch stands out for its powerful flow, Sarva connects a karst lake with a river whose course repeatedly disappears underground.
