Cultural and geological highlights in Iglinskiy District include a small late Neoclassical church, a historical and cultural centre, and landscape features shaped by the history of quarrying. These different themes can help you plan a trip to suit your interests: would you rather explore architecture and culture, or nature and geological history?

Culture between Ochlebino and Baltika

The Trinity Church in Ochlebino is a very small parish church in the late Neoclassical style. It was built in 1826. Its size, architectural style and date of construction give the building a clearly defined architectural profile: it is a specific point of interest for anyone interested in historic religious buildings.

Another cultural highlight is in Baltika. There you’ll find the Belarusian Historical and Cultural Centre in the A. N. Kharitonov multifunctional rural cultural centre. Together, the church and centre offer two different themes for planning your trip: the architecture of a small parish church and a place whose name reflects its Belarusian historical and cultural connection.

Geological stories and distinctive features

The Okhlebinskaya Gypsum Cave has been a geological natural monument since 1965. Another way to explore the landscape is to visit two bodies of water whose origins are linked to past quarrying.

The Blue Quarry, also known as Blue Lake, is a small pond with azure-blue water. It formed at the site of a former clay quarry near Tavtimanovo. Marmorsky Lake, in turn, filled up when groundwater completely flooded an abandoned gypsum quarry. Gypsum was mined at this site in the 1950s and 1960s. The two bodies of water have different histories: one is a pond formed at a former clay quarry, while the other was filled with groundwater in an abandoned gypsum quarry.

The Great Zmeinaya Hill also has a distinctive appearance. Seen from the side, it resembles a large-headed, hunchbacked snake with a winding body; it is almost entirely covered in deciduous forest. Its described shape and woodland offer two specific points of reference to help you picture this landscape feature.

If you’re travelling with children, choosing a shared focus can make planning easier: should the trip be more about architecture and culture, or about the landscape and how it formed?

Wider regional context: Republic of Bashkortostan

The Toratau UNESCO Global Geopark is located in the wider destination of the Republic of Bashkortostan. It includes geological outcrops near Usolka and Dalny Tulkas, as well as caves, waterfalls, gorges, mountain rivers and rugged rock exposures. The cultural heritage of this wider region includes the ruins of ancient settlements and fortresses. The Toratau UNESCO Global Geopark also showcases local cultural heritage, cuisine and crafts. Bashkiria National Park was established in 1986 to protect the natural resources of the Southern Urals and was the first and only national park in Bashkortostan. The park is home to 231 bird species, 148 of which breed there; its waters contain 32 fish species. These figures may change as new surveys are carried out.
