Aurgazinskiy District: Fossils, Caves and Folklore
Accommodation in Aurgazinskiy District
In Aurgazinskiy District, traces of geological time sit alongside cultural history. Ushkatly Gorge preserves fossil plant imprints; the Akhmerovsky Sinkhole near Akhmerovo and Akhmerovsky Cave add further geological features to the picture. The Galimdzhan Ibragimov Museum is located in Sultan-Muratovo. The district is also home to the “Games on the Urshak River” folklore festival, featuring folk games and competitions. Its themes range from Miocene plant fossils and gypsum formations to literary history and folklore.
Fossils and Geological Features
Ushkatly Gorge lies one kilometre west of the village of Sitdik-Mullino. Covering 15.9 hectares, the area has been designated a geological natural monument since 1965 and is known as a stratotypic geological outcrop of the Miocene Ushkatly Formation. Well-preserved fossil plant imprints have been found in its white, compacted refractory clay. These include swamp cypress, walnut, chestnut, beech, oak, birch and alder. The formation and plant remains reveal two aspects of the site: its geological context and the specific traces of the plant life that once grew there. The gorge is thus distinguished not only by its size and designation, but also by the variety of imprints it preserves.
The Akhmerovsky Cave, also known as Vertolyotnaya Cave, offers a different geological perspective. At 1,768 metres long and 50 metres deep, it is the longest cave in Bashkortostan’s gypsum deposits. Its entrance lies in a vast collapse sinkhole with overhanging edges, measuring 80 metres in diameter and 20 metres deep. These measurements describe two distinct features: the cave’s length and depth, and the diameter and depth of the sinkhole at its entrance. This makes it easy to distinguish the extensive cave system from the landform surrounding its entrance.
The Akhmerovsky Sinkhole lies on a plain near the village of Akhmerovo. A lake at its bottom is explored by cave divers. Alongside the fossil plant imprints and the cave’s dimensions, this lake adds a water-shaped landform to the district’s geological features.
Museum and Folklore
The Galimdzhan Ibragimov Museum in Sultan-Muratovo is dedicated to Galimdzhan Ibragimov (1887–1938), a public figure from the village, holder of the title “Hero of Labour” (1932) and a classic of Tatar literature. The museum opened in 1967 in the Sultan-Muratovo secondary school building and was converted into a house museum in 1987. That same year, a bust of the writer by Z. Basyrov was installed at the museum. The collection is based on the writer’s manuscripts, photographs and personal belongings. The opening and subsequent conversion mark two historical milestones; the bust was added in the year of the conversion.
On 17 June 2023, the republic-wide folklore festival “Games on the Urshak River” took place in the village of Turumbetovo. It featured folk games and competitions; Aurgazinskiy District chose the festival as its signature event. Alongside the museum’s history dedicated to the writer, the festival offers a different cultural focus: community games and competitions took centre stage. Literary heritage and folklore can therefore be seen as distinct aspects of regional culture.
