A bastion-style earthen fortress, museum collections and several memorial sites give Velikiye Luki its cultural and historical character. The themes range from fortress construction and military artefacts to commemorations of individual figures. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether the fortress, the museum collections or the memorial sites will be your main focus. This can also help you decide what to look for first when searching for a holiday apartment in Velikiye Luki, based on what you are most interested in during your stay.

Fortress and guided tour

The Velikiye Luki Fortress is classified as a cultural heritage site of federal significance. It was established at the beginning of the 18th century by order of Peter I; Peter the Great also had it reconstructed as a bastioned earthen fortress at the beginning of the 18th century.

The Velikiye Luki Local History Museum’s guided tour “V ogne i siyanii stali” (roughly, “In the Fire and Radiance of Steel”) takes visitors around the grounds of the bastioned earthen fortress. If you plan to take this tour, check the museum’s current ticket arrangements before your visit.

Museums and collections

The Velikiye Luki Local History Museum houses more than 40,000 museum objects. Its “Oruzhie” (“Weapons”) collection includes a 16th-century halberd, a chainmail shirt, 17th-century arm armour, and edged and firearms from the 18th to the 20th century. The collection thus brings together different types of objects and periods: while some pieces are dated to a single century, the weapons mentioned span several centuries.

The historical exhibition at the Local History Museum covers 352 m². The exhibition hall is closed for renovation until 2028. Two different figures help put this in context: the more than 40,000 figure refers to the museum’s objects, while the area figure refers to the historical exhibition. This distinguishes the extent of the museum’s overall collection from the specific exhibition space described.

The Academician I. M. Vinogradov Memorial House Museum offers a different perspective. It is housed in the restored family home of the mathematician and holds around 6,000 memorial objects. The combination of the house and collection focuses attention on one scientist and sets this museum apart from the Local History Museum’s broader collection. In choosing between them, you can opt for a collection of military history objects or a museum whose name and location are linked to Vinogradov’s biography.

Memorial sites in the city

The Alley of Heroes of Military Glory opened on 17 January 2015. It is in the memorial zone by the Eternal Flame on the A. Matrosov Embankment. A bust of Konstantin Konstantinovich Rokossovsky was erected on Theatre Square in 1951. He was born in Velikiye Luki and was a two-time Hero of the Soviet Union as well as Marshal of the Soviet Union and Poland.

The story of Alexander Matrosov is also associated with a specific place: in July 1948, his remains were transferred from Loknya District and reburied in Pokrovskaya Square, now Matrosov Square in Velikiye Luki. The Matrosov Monument is part of the city’s memorial complex. Taken together, the dates 1948, 1951 and 2015 provide a timeline of different stages of commemoration. The reburial, the bust and the alley each represent distinct places and events.
