Porchow can be explored through two defining chapters in its history: its founding in the 13th century and the stone fortress built later. The town also offers church architecture, local history and themes related to traditional crafts.

The Fortress and the Beginnings of the Town

Porchow was founded in 1239 by Alexander Nevsky as part of the defensive system of the Principality of Novgorod. The stone fortress was built in 1387 as an important outpost of the Novgorod Republic. It is well preserved and considered the town’s main attraction. The two dates belong to different political contexts: the founding refers to the principality, while the later fortress is associated with the Novgorod Republic. Together, they tell the story of two distinct periods in the region’s defensive history.

Church Architecture, Museums and Remembrance

The Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God is one of three 14th-century architectural monuments within Porchow. It is also considered the only monument of Novgorodian church architecture in Pskov Oblast to have survived almost in its original form. These two classifications highlight different aspects: one looks at the town’s medieval architectural monuments, while the other focuses on the church’s special place within the wider travel region.

Porchow is also home to the House Museum of the History of the Porchow Region and the House Museum of Military Glory. Their names point to two other aspects of the town: regional history and military remembrance. If you are planning a museum visit, check visiting arrangements with the relevant museum in advance.

The nearby Dulag-100 camp complex, which held prisoners of war and civilians, is also part of the area’s history. It operated until February 1944, and more than 85,000 people died there. After the liberation of Porchow, an obelisk was erected at the burial site. This nearby place adds a site of remembrance in the surrounding area to the themes found in the town itself.

Town Walks and Crafts

In 2013, the “Zero Kilometer” project published five booklets titled “Intellectual Walks through Porkhov.” For the town’s 775th anniversary, the Pskov Regional Library for the Blind and Visually Impaired adapted the booklets and published the edition “Five Routes from Zero Kilometer: Walks through the Town of Porkhov.” The titles distinguish a five-part booklet series from a specially adapted edition and show the importance of walks in exploring Porchow.

Themed route “Health Trail – Medicinal Herbs” was also developed for the town. Its title connects the walking theme with medicinal herbs. If you are planning to follow the route, check its current condition and access in advance.

The museum describes excursion routes through Porchow that visit sites in the town: the Old Settlement, the fortress, the House of Crafts, the Exhibition Hall and the “Post Museum.” The selection brings together different landmarks in the town’s history and culture. If you are planning an excursion, contact the museum for current arrangements.

At the House of Crafts, a department of the Museum of Folk Art and Artistic Culture, visitors can learn traditional techniques: weaving with grass, willow and birch bark, as well as loom weaving. This adds a practical craft dimension to the themes of culture, architecture and history. If you would like to take part in a workshop, ask in advance about current dates and availability.
