In Mokshansky District, botanically protected natural landmarks meet literary history, fortification architecture and a sculpture park. These themes offer several clearly distinct focal points for planning your trip: you can focus on nature, the history of Mokshan, or the exhibitions and artworks.

Four natural landmarks of varying sizes

The district’s botanical heritage includes four natural landmarks of regional significance. The Ramzaysky Reserve of the Litvinov-Kopfigen covers 1.5 hectares, while the Ramzay Oak Forest covers 36 hectares. The Bolshoy Endovy Steppe extends over 50 hectares, and the Belogorskaya Steppe over 60 hectares. All four have a botanical conservation designation.

The areas therefore range from a comparatively small natural landmark to one covering 60 hectares. This comparison makes the different scales of the protected areas tangible without losing sight of their shared botanical focus. If you are mainly interested in nature, you will find several named areas here rather than just one focal point.

Literary history and fortifications in Mokshan

In the town of Mokshan is the literary and memorial museum dedicated to the writer A. G. Malyshkin. The museum is housed in the former home of the Malyshkin family; its exhibition hall is in the house of watchmaker Novitsky. The museum opened on March 21, 1977. Its two-house layout is part of its distinctive structure, as is its connection to the writer’s family.

The bakery at the A. G. Malyshkin Museum offers theatrical events, fairs featuring Petrushka, culinary workshops and quest tours about Russian everyday culture from the 19th to the early 20th century. Before planning your visit, it is advisable to check which of these formats are currently available. The bakery also displays everyday objects belonging to both poorer and wealthier peasants, as well as the exhibition «Yarmarka v uyezdnom gorode». The museum site thus combines everyday history and fairground themes with event formats.

The rampart in Mokshan offers a different historical perspective. It was part of the Penza Line of Fortifications and is a fragment of the wall of Mokshan Fortress, dating from the 17th century. The fortress was built to protect the borders of the Russian state from nomads. The rampart thus points to the town’s fortifications, while the founding of the fortress explains the site’s historical purpose.

Tower complex, spring and sculptures

The «Storozhevaya bashnya» complex was created in 2023, replacing a wooden tower with a palisade that had been built almost 45 years earlier. It includes an access area with a car park, a full-size model of a 17th-century watchtower from the Line of Fortifications, with an interior staircase and a section of palisade, an observation platform with ramps and steps, a modular toilet and a memorial stone. The site therefore combines a historic tower model with several other features designed in different ways. Check the current availability of the facilities listed before visiting.

At the source of the Moksha River in Vyglyadovka, there is an observation pavilion where visitors can rest and view the spring. The «Legenda» sculpture park in the village of Ramzay offers a very different experience: more than 300 works made of metal, granite, wood and bronze are on display there. This number may change over time.

When planning your trip, you can choose between botanical protected areas, literary and fortification history, the river’s source and sculpture art. If you are travelling with your family, you can decide together which themes will shape your choice of destinations. When looking for a holiday apartment, choosing your main interests is a useful starting point before adding individual places to your itinerary.
