Mokshansky District in Penza Oblast brings together literary heritage, a 17th-century fortification, a holy spring and a sculpture park with more than 300 works. The A. G. Malyshkin Literary and Memorial Museum tells the story of writing and everyday culture; at the rampart and the “Storozhevaya Bashnya” complex, the history of the Penza defensive line comes to life. The attractions range from exhibitions to open-air sites, giving your stay a variety of cultural and scenic highlights.

Literary History at the Malyshkin Museum

The Literary and Memorial Museum of writer A. G. Malyshkin is located in the Malyshkin family’s memorial house and the adjoining former home of watchmaker Novitsky. The museum’s exhibition hall is in the Novitsky house. The literary hall uses manuscripts, reviews and illustrations to present Malyshkin’s life and work. Literary documents are thus displayed alongside the rooms that make up the museum.

The museum bakery also brings together different aspects of life: it displays household items used by poor and wealthy peasants. The exhibition “Yarmarka v uyezdnom gorode” is connected to the story “Polevoy prazdnik.” Sasha Malyshkin wrote this first story in 1914 while studying at Saint Petersburg University. The bakery’s program also includes theatrical events, fairs featuring Petrushka, cooking workshops and quest tours about Russian everyday culture from the 19th to the early 20th century. Check dates and availability for these activities before visiting.

A 17th-Century Rampart

The Mokshan earthwork is an archaeological and historical monument dating to the 17th century. It was part of the Penza defensive line and a fragment of Mokshan’s former fortress wall. Here, two scales of history meet: the region’s defensive line and the town’s own fortifications.

The “Storozhevaya Bashnya” complex was restored in 2023. It includes an access area with a parking zone, a scale model of a 17th-century watchtower from the Penza defensive line, and an observation platform with ramps and steps. Individual visitors can climb the watchtower independently during operating hours. Check current opening hours before your visit.

Spring and Sculpture Park

The holy spring of the Moksha is 1.6 kilometers southeast of the village of Vyglyadovka. An observation pavilion stands by the spring, where you can rest and look out at the water. It combines a natural setting with a simple place to linger.

The “Legenda” sculpture park in Mokshansky District features more than 300 works made from different materials, including metal, granite, wood and bronze. The park is considered one of the world’s largest sculpture parks and the only one in the Volga region. Its variety of materials makes it a different cultural highlight from the literary museum: here, the sculptures and their varied materials take center stage.

More Cultural Sites in Penza Oblast

The wider destination of Penza Oblast also offers distinctive cultural attractions with different areas of focus. The State Lermontov Museum-Reserve “Tarkhany” is located in the village of Lermontovo in Belinsky District. The first complex includes a protected park, three orchards, an oak grove and ponds. The All-Russian Lermontov Festival Days have been held there since 1971.

In Penza, the Museum of One Painting, named after G. V. Myasnikov, offers a distinctive presentation format: first, a 45-minute film about the artist, the painting, its figures and the culture of its time is screened. The curtain then opens, and the painting is presented with explanatory text and music. The hall has 37 seats. These examples are in Penza Oblast as a whole and broaden the picture of the sights in Mokshansky District without replacing them.
