Orsk brings urban history to life in a former merchant estate: the Stary Gorod Museum and Cultural Centre is located in the former estate of merchant Muzafar Shakhpulatov. The building is one of the most valuable monuments of urban development from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Architecture and culture meet here in one place.

A historic estate as a cultural centre

The building dates from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The estate is also part of the history of merchant Muzafar Shakhpulatov. Those interested in the development of urban architecture will find a tangible point of reference here, connected to a cultural venue in Orsk.

The centre hosts guided tours, lectures, workshops, immersive events, festivals, ceremonies, film screenings, and virtual and other exhibitions. This range brings together different forms of cultural engagement and programming. The specific events and dates depend on the programme.

Discover urban history on guided tours

The Orsk Local History Museum offers an overview tour of the region's history, spanning from the first people to the end of the 20th century. The programme includes the exhibitions “Velikaya step”, “Orenburgskaya-Orskaya krepost”, “Orskiy uyezd 1865–1917”, “Orsk v gody Grazhdanskoy voyny”, “Orsk i orchane v gody Velikoy Otechestvennoy voyny” and “Orsk – industrialny tsentr Vostochnogo Orenburzhya”. The sequence of themes takes visitors from early traces through the history of the fortress and district to wartime experiences and Orsk as an industrial centre of the eastern Orenburg region.

The tour is intended for senior school students and individual visitors. It runs from 15 September to 30 December; advance booking is required. A published announcement also lists a walking tour of the old town, visiting architectural monuments and public buildings from the late 19th century, for August to October 2026.

If the overview tour is to be the focus of your stay, plan your travel dates to fit its schedule and allow for the required advance booking.

Nature trails in the wider destination of Orenburg Oblast

Several educational trails in the wider destination of Orenburg Oblast explore different aspects of nature. The 650-metre Dykhanie Stepi nature trail runs through the Predural'skaya Step' section of the Orenburgskiy Nature Reserve and leads to the Przewalski's horse reintroduction centre. Visitors walk in a group with a nature reserve staff member as their guide; the horses can be seen up close in acclimatisation enclosures and photographed or filmed. Visitor information is seasonal, so it is advisable to check current operating details before travelling.

On the Letopis Prirody educational trail, information boards teach visitors about animal tracks. Ancient ferns can be seen in shady ravines, and a climb leads to a viewing platform overlooking wooded lowlands. The one-kilometre Tsaritsa-Sosna educational trail in Tsar-Bor Eco-Park is designed for the whole family. There are also four learning and play areas for children of different ages. The two examples offer different focuses: nature observation on one trail, and learning and play on the other.

The Ocharovannyy Strannik educational trail leads up Mount Nepristupnaya and offers a long loop of 1,700 metres and a short one of 600 metres. The two distances provide a clear choice between a shorter and a longer route, without specifying a walking time. Visitor information is seasonal here too, so check current operating details before travelling.
