Kildinstroy tells the story of a village that grew up around a brickworks, and of the memory of those who fell in the Great Patriotic War. Seasonal expeditions are also available in the municipality; in Murmansk Oblast, trails and exhibitions in Umba offer a distinctive perspective on the Pomors. These different highlights are easy to distinguish when planning your trip: local history, outdoor activities and regional culture each offer a different focus.

From Brickworks to Local History

The village of the same name, Kil’dinstroy, was established in 1937 next to the Kildin brickworks, when it began operating. The village’s origins are therefore closely tied to a specific period in its industrial history. This provides a vivid point of reference for local history: the settlement grew up next to the works as operations began.

A 2007 administrative directory lists a mass grave with a soldier sculpture and a memorial marker in Kil’dinstroy commemorating residents who fell on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. The two forms of remembrance place different emphasis on the past: one is a mass grave with a sculpture, while the other specifically remembers local residents who fell. Thus, alongside the village’s origins, memorial sites are among the historical themes that shape Kildinstroy.

Seasonal Expeditions in the Municipality

Tundra Park offers expeditions to the summit of Fox Mountain in the municipality it serves. In summer, a KamAZ truck is used for the trip; in winter, an all-terrain tracked vehicle is used. The destination is the same in both seasons; the mode of transport described changes with the season. As these are seasonal activities, check whether they are currently running before your trip.

Pomor Culture in Murmansk Oblast

The guided walking trail in Umba offers insights into the history of the Pomors. Seven information boards cover the history of the settlement, the Pomors, their livelihoods and their everyday life. The guided trail is 5.5 kilometres long and also offers impressions of northern wooden architecture. It follows a river and continues all the way to the sea. The guided route must be booked at least two days in advance; check the current arrangements with the operator before your visit.

The Museum of the History, Culture and Everyday Life of the Tersky Pomors in Umba complements this with historical exhibits. The exhibition covers livelihoods from the 18th to the early 20th century, including fishing, hunting marine mammals, shipbuilding and pearl fishing. It also features crafts from this period: carpentry and joinery, woodworking, shoemaking, as well as women’s crafts and needlework. The economic activities and craft knowledge of the Tersky Pomors are presented side by side.

Another historical point of interest in Murmansk Oblast is Tonia “Tetrina”. This open-air complex focuses on history and ethnography and is documented from as early as the 15th century. Compared with the clearly defined themes of the Umba exhibition, this description offers a broader historical and ethnographic perspective.

Choosing the Right Holiday Apartment for Your Travel Interests

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to explore Kildinstroy’s local history, are you interested in seasonal expeditions in the municipality, or would you like to include Pomor-related attractions in Umba? These places and activities are located at different geographic levels.
